field trips chaperones

I don't know why I am worried about this but what happens if parents do not volunteer for class field trips? What does the school or teacher do?
Anonymous
Depends on specific logistics but they may cancel if the adult to child ratio is not correct.

In my experience there are usually more volunteers for chaperones than spots available.

They make it. Work.

I’ve been on a field trip where they recruited a para educator and the para educator’s mom also chaperoned.

DCPS has tightened the requirements for chaperones this year and parents need to go through a background check.

We've had one field trip canceled already because there were not enough chaperones.

Teacher here.
We cancel if there aren't enough. This is especially true when we have a high number of students who need more "support" than others (runners for example).

I was a chaperone last year and the only one for a second grade class. I just got 11 kids. I was counting all the time. Luckily I knew most of them.

One thing that would be helpful is if they picked places that were lower-key/easier to get to.

I just was a chaperone on a pumpkin patch field trip. We're in Bowie. Field trip was in freaking Lothian. We literally passed four other pumpkin patches on the way to...the pumpkin patch. We were on the bus for 40 minutes each way.

The place was great, but massive. There were multiple stations of things to do, but no way everyone was getting to all the stations. So kids were disappointed. There was no direction; everything was like, "Do whatever," but then when you went to get in line, a teacher would say, "No, go eat your lunch now; we want to make sure everyone gets lunch out of the way."

If they'd keep it simple, that would be better.

As seen by the variety of responses, it depends on the school, the trip, and the class. I teach ESOL and I’ve been recruited to go on field trips if there aren’t enough chaperones. Or the class without enough is split among other classes, with chaperones taking kids from their kid’s class and maybe 1-2 from another class. Or a para, or non-classroom teacher (counselor, staff developer, etc) goes. Or nothing, and the teachers make it work. We’ve never had to cancel for lack of chaperones

I feel there are always more chaperones than needed.

My school district has approved vendors and locations, so we take the path of most resistance for just about everything we do. We needed decorations for our homecoming, but we couldn't use Amazon. They're not approved. We ended up spending 5x as much because Walmart, Target, and Amazon aren't approved. The same goes for field trips. We can go to one place but not the other. It's ridiculous.

Im chaperoning a field trip tomorrow. We were told only 2 chaperones per class allowed. Turns out only 2 from our class and my friend's son's class offered. We are at a focus school and i think most people work and can not easily take off for a field trip.
