What does "most rigorous" mean?

Anonymous
Dd's school offers 27 AP classes and 12 honors classes. She took 5 AP classes and 7 honors classes. What does most rigorous really mean? If you compare her to some peers with 9 or 12 APs, she did not take the "most rigorous."

High math track available. Same for all other subjects studied.

So she is probably going to do a bit worse than those kids in admissions, ceteris paribus.

Sounds like she will be a notch below those other students, unless the students who do more are a tiny number - like 10 or less.

Isn't it just a box?

It depends on what the options were. Did she take APs in the core subjects? Did she choose them where they were available to her?

And yes it is just a box on a form the GC fills out.

If means if you school offers AP's take some of them.

If it does not , then be sure to take honors.

And the courses you take, should make sense for your interest (like Calculus if you want to be an engineer).

Don't take all easy classes to get a high GPA.

I would think it means AP level in each subject.

What it means is objective - based on how the guidance counselor interprets the question. But they have to decide based on the entire class’ profile. The other thing the counselor will share is how your GPA stacks up - even if they don’t rank. Top 10%, top 25% etc. If you have taken far fewer APs and honors classes your GPA will reflect it.

However, unless you are aiming for a highly selective college without a hook, it probably won’t matter much.

Highest class offered. So if an AP is offered then that, if only honors is offered, then that. If there is only regular, than that is ok (for example theater classes). There may be more or less APs available depending on your kid’s interests. Seems to be a lot of AP options for history kids, for example. My DS likes engineering and in his school those only go up to honors.

Do you think this is really true? I know kids who have transferred in from privates and have been on a less accelerated math track. If they still get to AP Calculus and they get all A's, what's the problem? Kids can't help it if they were not part of the MCPS system at an early age when the super-acceleration decisions were being made.

Most rigorous means taking the many of highest level classes available at your school. If something isn’t offered, it won’t be held against you.

It means AP Physics C not 1 or 2
It means Calculus BC not AB
It means AP Chem and/or AP Bio not AP Psych or AP Environmental Science
It means both AP Lit and AP Language
It means AP Histories for 3+ years
It means AP Foreign Language
AP Stats is a nice add on but not in lieu of BC Calc
