| With all the rain over the weekend, I was thinking about all the terrible grass fields out there that our kids play on. What are some of the worst soccer fields to play on and why and how do we get leagues/clubs not to use them any longer without fixing them? |
|
I returned from Argentina a few weeks ago. If you think the fields here in DMV are bad you need to get outside this country. The kids I saw were playing in a community facility that is over 100 years old. The outdoor field wasnt field to run your dog on. yet somehow the kids managed, smiled and enjoyed themselves.
What is it about wet fields in DMV that concern you so much |

Muldoon Farms!!
It’s bad during dry season and gets worse when it rains. |

They all have to play somewhere. Enjoy the mud.
If you feel strongly that clubs shouldn’t use those fields, then don’t be a hypocrite. Find a different sport for your kid. |

I played travel here in the 80s and it was all grass fields and games were almost never cancelled.
I remember getting coached on how to play under various different conditions. The most fun was when the ball would literally get stuck in the mud and you were up against another player trying to get it out and also slide tackles in the mud!! I also remember 'dust bowls'. Dry fields with hardly any grass and the wind blowing dirt everywhere. My older sister did tear her ACL on a grass field with the grass way too long when she was 17. It was pretty gruesome. I still have memories of cleaning my cleats that literally were encased in mud after some games. It was best to let it dry completely and then bang them furiously. I also polished them meticulously with leather protector. |
The county closes all grass fields when it rain. Kids still play in the rain on turf fields though. |
| OP here. Fair enough. I think I went a little too far with not playing on them but what I was truly looking for was what are the worst fields other than Muldoons of course. : ) |
| We played at soccerplex field 1 yesterday - which was open, even though grass. Anyone know why? |
| There are many crappy grass fields, but I think grass is better on the joints than turf. I'd love to see the stats on ACL injuries, ankle sprains and so on for grass versus turf. |
| I've seen some astroturf pitches that are well beyond their use by date. Some of them are as hard as cement and packed down way too tight. |
Some fields are designed to drain water quickly and efficiently. Soccerplex might be one of them. I met a guy years ago who was a Turf Mgmt major and I thought to myself what the hec would you do with that type of major...I look around now and the possibilities are endless. |
| muldoons!!!!! |
| WJ turf field. In such a state of disrepair that it's dangerous. Although MoCo will not admit that it's subpar. Will be replaced next year, I believe. |
| you ppl will complain about everything. We have access to some of the best fields in the country, maybe world, and plenty of turf. AND YET! |
Are you complaining about the complainers? |
