When is the earliert you can detect a heartbeat?

Anonymous
I am having a sonogram tomorrow at 6 weeks. Will they be able to detect a heart beat? And when is it possible to determine multiples?

Thanks the the info.

you can detect a heartbeat early--5 to 6 weeks at the earliest. You can't hear it, but it will be a blue dot. Here, this is what mine looked like.

That was at 6 weeks. You can't hear it, you can just see it.

I think 6 weeks is on the early side for the heartbeat - it's possible, but don't be alarmed if they don't see it.

I agree with this. It is more likely that you will hear it at 8 weeks.

6 weeks is not too early, that was when our hb was detected...

it's possible but if not detectable it is not alarming. yes for some women and babies it is too early.

agreed.
I'm the one that posted the link to the pic. that was taken at 6 weeks. It wasn't too early to see it. But I will agree, and I should have said this before, don't be surprised if you don't hear it. That's the earliest it shows. It could depend on when during the 6th week you are and your baby's development, or other things, and mean absolutely nothing if it takes a few extra weeks. And it depends on the docs equipment too.
My baby's heartbeat was 113 bpm when this was taken.

good luck. agree w/pp's about not being alarmed if you don't see a hb. you also asked about multiples. this should be apparent on the u/s.

Someone else correct me if I am wrong but I think at 6 weeks you will definitely see fraternal mutiples but could miss identical multiples, is that right?

they can make a mistake and not see one, but its really rare. however, at 6 weeks its a lot more likely.

at 6 weeks your us isnt very sensitive. the purpose of it is mainly to confirm pregnancy, and make sure there are no complications thus far(i.e. tubal pregnancy). To get your definite answer, you will need to wait until you can see better.

I've had two friends who didn't hear a heartbeat around 6 weeks - one m/c and one was fine, but they just didn't hear it for another week or so. I waited to do my first u/s at a little over 7 weeks for that reason. Good luck.

I'm going for my 7 week ultra sound tomorrow. I had no idea you couldn't hear it, but rather just see it! Glad I read this thread. How can they measure BPM if they can't hear it?

I've read that under 100 is not great - but also don't want to freak out if there is no good reason to. What am I looking for tomorrow?

I heard the heartbeat at 6 weeks, but was told that was extremely rare. I could definitely see it at that point.
