Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-5, other subcompacts...

Looking into buying a subcompact. The Toyota RAV 4 and the Honda CR-V have gotten bigger. Would love to hear thoughts on other subcompacts -

Pros? Cons?

My DH has a Mazda CX-5 and it has been extremely reliable and great in all weather with AWD.

We are a Mazda family...I have the CX-9, also very reliable AWD and while it was in my CX-9, I will tell you that driving up I-81 and then 66....in the dark...through heavy rain that turned into sleet/freezing rain that then turned into white out snowfall....well...I kissed my car when I arrive home safe and sound.

We bought HR-V and I don't like the car at all. The break makes clicking sound - dealership says it's normal, the warning light come up with every small thing, it has zero power and is loud. It also takes way more gas than I though it would.
I wish I had test-driven Mazda cx3 or cx5. My sister is not happy with her Rav 4 either. We both drove Mazdas previously.
Toyota and Honda are like dead fish next to Mazda.
Go test drive it. Lack of power is the first thing you notice. Even the "S" sport mode doesn't make it up.
I drive in the city 25-35mph and it's still painful. The look is the only thing going to the HR-v and hopefully long life.

We have the CX-5. It's an older model (2014). I've driven some of the others in this class as rental vehicles, and I think the CX-5 is the most fun to drive. It has a little more road noise, and the bluetooth technology was sometimes glitchy for us. Otherwise, it's zippy and reliable.

OP here. Thanks! I have always loved hondas (still driving my 99 Accord!) and my DH is a Toyota guy. But lately, I have been seeing a lot of CX-5s and I love the size and look.

Lots of test driving my future. But good to hear feedback.

CX-5 is bigger than the HR-V. I found the HR-V to be annoyingly small and impractical. If you want a car that size, I think you'll get a better car with the Subaru Crosstrek.

CX-5 is a great car, especially with one of the more luxurious trim lines. I still think the CX-5 is more equivalent to a RAV-4/CR-V, than an HR-V.

I would agree that the Crosstrek seems nicer than the HRV. I drive a 2017 CR-V and DH has been looking at getting a new car. I've been encouraging him to look at the Hondas. He also wanted something a little smaller than my CRV. We sat in the HRV several times. Then checked out the Crosstrek. I had to admit that the Crosstrek was better inside than the HRV. Just seemed like a higher grade. That said, DH and I have discussed it and just don't know why someone would buy that genre of car b/c it ends up costing almost the same as the CRV and Rav4 and you get less space. So, sure, if you REALLY want to have less interior space in your vehicle and pay the same as the CRV and RAV4, it makes sense. But, you aren't getting better mileage and you aren't really saving any cash. So, in my opinion, the CRV and RAV4 make sense for a lot of people b/c they give you the max benefits for the price of smaller cars.

We also looked at and test drove the Kia Soul. Cute little car. But, we did NOT like the way it turns off when you stop at a light. It was disconcerting to not know if the car engine quit on you or if it was a planned kill of the engine. We also liked the Kona. we didn't test drive it. But, again, you get the most value for your $$ with the CRV and Rav4 types, it seemed to us.
