CX-5 is bigger than the HR-V. I found the HR-V to be annoyingly small and impractical. If you want a car that size, I think you'll get a better car with the Subaru Crosstrek. CX-5 is a great car, especially with one of the more luxurious trim lines. I still think the CX-5 is more equivalent to a RAV-4/CR-V, than an HR-V.
I would agree that the Crosstrek seems nicer than the HRV. I drive a 2017 CR-V and DH has been looking at getting a new car. I've been encouraging him to look at the Hondas. He also wanted something a little smaller than my CRV. We sat in the HRV several times. Then checked out the Crosstrek. I had to admit that the Crosstrek was better inside than the HRV. Just seemed like a higher grade. That said, DH and I have discussed it and just don't know why someone would buy that genre of car b/c it ends up costing almost the same as the CRV and Rav4 and you get less space. So, sure, if you REALLY want to have less interior space in your vehicle and pay the same as the CRV and RAV4, it makes sense. But, you aren't getting better mileage and you aren't really saving any cash. So, in my opinion, the CRV and RAV4 make sense for a lot of people b/c they give you the max benefits for the price of smaller cars. We also looked at and test drove the Kia Soul. Cute little car. But, we did NOT like the way it turns off when you stop at a light. It was disconcerting to not know if the car engine quit on you or if it was a planned kill of the engine. We also liked the Kona. we didn't test drive it. But, again, you get the most value for your $$ with the CRV and Rav4 types, it seemed to us.
