| I appreciate the sentiment, but can DC come up with something that is less of a mouthful? |
| DC didn’t come up with this, the movement has been around for years. |
| Native Americans? |
| Happy Columbus Day! |
| Happy Indigenous People's Day, from this Italian-American who loathes Christopher Columbus! |
| I would greatly prefer First Nations. |
|
I would love to change it to something like American Diversity day, that celebrates both our First Nations and the various immigrants who have made our country strong.
Columbus was such an a-hole. Really the worst of “America.” |
How is it a mouthful? Easy concept to understand and say. |
| Do away with it completely. Too many federal holidays now. |
What do you think of Americus Vespucci? |
| I think a day to celebrate First Nations is a great idea, but I wouldn’t want to celebrate me on the day a great tragedy befell me. It seems odd to choose this day. |

Columbus sailed in 1492.
Italy wasn’t a country until late 1800s. He was likely Portuguese anyway. |
Haters gonna hate. You and everybody else alive today have no idea of the mindset in 1492 so I wouldn't judge him or anyone else that I've never met who died almost 600 years ago. |
But if we're deciding who to honor with a holiday, then "well I wasn't alive so I can't judge him" isn't particularly compelling. I mean, there are lots of people who died 600 years ago who we can't judge, include many many indigenous Americans whose deaths were the result of this man's choices. I still think it's weird to honor someone on the birthday of the people We didn't schedule MLK day on James Earl Ray's birthday. I think maybe we should disconnect days off from these kinds of value statements. Be like the Canadians and just have a "bank holiday". Then figure out a better way to honor our First Nations than staying home from work. |
| We like to call it Canadian thanksgiving |
