| I’m considering the basic model. What are the realities of owning one? Insurance? Your electric bill when you charge at home? It looks like the basic model doesn’t get free supercharging- so how much does it cost when you’re traveling? |
| It costs 5 dollars for a full charge according to my juicebox charger. That means you are driving 250 miles. We still have a plugin hybrid for our other family car |
Super charger is $25 for a full charge |
| Only good as a commuter car. Range anxiety is real. Car eats miles in the cold and the mountains. |

My DH has had one for 3+ years now. We have a charger at home and also solar panels from Solar City, which is now just called Tesla.
We live in Los Angeles, and can easily get around. However; when we want to go to visit my mom about 90 miles away for the weekend, we take my car because I don't want to sit around waiting for the car to charge; takes much longer than getting gas, and also, we could probably do the whole weekend without getting gas if we take a gas-powered car. We went out towards Palm Springs one weekend and I remember just kicking around a parking lot for a long time while the car charged up and I thought...why....why... But he loves that car and on a daily basis the range does not come into play. On another note, it's annoying being a passenger in it because his sudden accelerations (at yellow lights) throw my head around if I'm not ready for it, or if I'm half-turned around talking to the kids. And one kid is perpetually car-sick, because unlike other cars, a Tesla does not coast; it decelerates to charge up the battery when you are not accelerating. |
| This is all helpful, thank you. |

Tesla girls Tesla girls
Writing in their diaries Now and then they'll watch TV Now and then they'll speak to me But heaven knows their recipe |
Just curious about why you don’t take the Tesla on the 90 mile trip? 90 miles there and even the return trip is well within the car’s range. 30 minutes at a supercharger and you gain back that range. 90 miles would leave a lot of range for running around and even a level 2 station would work to maintain daily needs. Can you plug into level 1 at Mom’s House when you are visiting? M |
| We have one and the range is never an issue. Look at the map of super chargers—they are all up and down the highways and it takes an hour to super charge so we just stop and get a bite. You can also use regular chargers of course. We went to Shenandoah and just used the regular chargers overnight. |
| Just bought my 18 years old DS the Model 3 and he loves it. It is his main car. |
| We drive from LA to Vegas and only stop once at a supercharger. We just plan to take an hour lunch midway. It works out perfectly. DH is on his second Tesla and says it has spoiled him for any other car. The only cons we have run into is if you get into an accident since you may have to wait a while for parts and the tires are very expensive. |
| Why is the Telsa 3 a third of the price of the S? What are you not getting with the 3 other than some additional space? |
Range, interior display and free supercharging not included. I sat in all of them and it has a more basic feel. It’s like a Sentra and the S is like a big Lexus - or that was how I felt anyway. |

We've had a Model X for a couple of years now and we just ordered a Model 3. Our Model 3 will actually have longer range than the X (we got the highest level option). It's basic but I really love the simplicity of the interior design. The only premium features our X has that are not on the 3 are the automatic doors and heated steering wheel. May be a few other things I don't recall now. I should add that I HATE the falcon doors on the X! Pain in the butt and everyone hits their heads on them all the time. There is a Y model coming out next year that is a smaller version of the X and with normal doors. We may trade in the X for the Y. We'll see.
You do have to plan for charging if you're going long distance and it definitely adds time to road trips. But Tesla keeps adding more super chargers and faster ones that can cut the charging time in half. DH is keen on never having to buy gas again, and nothing drives like a Tesla. We love them. |
Not OP, but this is helpful, thank you. I am thinking of getting a Tesla X since we are a family of 5 and I could use the extra room, but I was wondering about those falcon doors and if they are a pain, and looks like they are. Maybe I should wait it out for the Y, although I'm going to need a family car sooner than later. |
