What do you mean? It’s from his record.

This song always reminds me of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

No, in the original album/studio recording (from “Nashville Skyline”—https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LhzEsb2tNbI) he sings it in that smooth crooner voice and there’s that tapping instrument sound (spoons???).

The version I initially linked to is not the original studio recording, but I prefer it....anyone know where its from??

“Lay Lady Lay" was originally written for the soundtrack of the movie Midnight Cowboy, but wasn't submitted in time to be included in the finished film.

Since then he’s done several versions or bootlegs of the original. He claimed the voice change you hear is because he quit smoking before recording the new album. Some unreleased bootleg recordings from the early 1960s reveal that, in fact, Dylan had used a similar singing style before.

Curious, what’s “cringey” about this song in particular? Or do you find Dylan cringey in general...?

It's my favorite Dylan song

OP, the source in your link is "Post Productions Perform a Tribute to Bob Dylan." The Post Productions YouTube channel "about" section identifies it as a Dylan tribute channel. It looks like this is a cover by some anonymous singer imitating Dylan on YouTube.

I loved the song until my husband pointed out the misogynistic lyrics to me.

“Whatever colors you have in your mind
I show them to you and you see them shine”

“Stay with your man a while
Until the break of day
Let me see you make him smile”

I guess...

But Dylan also says:
“His clothes are dirty but his, his hands are clean
And you are the best thing that he's ever seen”
As he pleads with her to stay.

He also says:
“Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you”
Almost sounds like it’s a man who knows he’s not perfect, perhaps even beneath this magnificent woman—
But he’s practically begging her to stay with him...sniff sniff...
