Was it true? Catholic doctors.

When I was a teenager, my mom told me that if I ever had a baby, don't go to a Catholic hospital because if something went wrong and the doctor had to choose just one of us to save, he’d save the baby. Was there any truth to that? I assume it’s not true today.

Idk but my mom was heavily bleeding during a miscarriage and the doc wouldn’t do a D&C because it terminates the pregnancy. He was Catholic. Fortunately she just expelled the embryo or fetus. Idk how far along she was.

My mother told me that a catholic doctor wouldn’t make a choice either way - so if the baby were going to die no matter what but the mother could survive (or the other way around) the catholic doctor would just let it play out, making it more likely that both would die rather than taking action to save the mother that could endanger the (already doomed) baby. Not sure if this is true, but it made me suspicious of catholic hospitals.

Ask this in the expecting forum. I’ve seen a few references to this being true about Georgetown Hospital.

Just last week, something similar happened in a small town in Washington state where the only hospital was Catholic.

And more info here in a Forbes article about how widespread this is.

Just to be fair, it looks like the people enacting these laws were hospital administrators and nurses. The people seen in the ED were “providers,” and the only MD mentioned was essentially an admin as well. From the article, the physicians involved in the actual
patient care were the ones who advocated for and saved these women.

Yes, it’s true.

It's true enough I'd never risk it unless I had no other options at all.

Common belief by non-Catholics, but I’m Catholic and can say it’s not a universal practice by Catholic doctors. Catholic hospitals may have specific policies regarding abortion, but that could happen with a non-Catholic doctor at that same institution. And there are ethical boards that discuss scenarios where certain procedures not normally allowed by Catholic teaching might be accommodated. I had a quality of life procedure at a Catholic hospital although it ended my fertility. No drama involved.

Um, did you read the links posted?? Do you really want an ethics committee deliberating about your medical treatment while you are in agony from life-threatening sepsis??

NP here, and I did read the article. The ethics committee was contacted by telephone and it was less than an hour from when the doc said she would call to when the patient was informed of the decision and action was taken.

Doesn’t ring true to me. In med school OB/Gyn rotation a catholic attending told me he put women who were catholic on BCP to help regulate their cycles. Of course, they were not getting pregnant while on the pill.

This is almost verbatim from a novel from the 60s. I want to say Peyton Place? I remember reading my mom’s copy decades ago.
