Best HS Math Magnet Program

Anonymous
Moving next month and DC wants the strongest math program available (High School level). Some parents said Blair, while others said 3W's (topped by Wooton). I've heard a lot of opinions (some not even relevant), but very few facts. Is there any way to look up actual school SAT scores? Or maybe which school had the greatest number of technology institute admissions? Or what advanced math courses are offered?

Blair has the most but is very difficult to get into

OP - if you live there and go to TPMS, is it easier to get in?

Blair offers through MultiVariable calculus, plus some electives like linear algebra (you can see in their course bulletin.) If Blair is your base school, you can make it first choice and will get in. Even if you aren't in the SMCS program, you can still access the highest math classes.

RMHS also offers through MVC and the IB HL math class covers a lot of advanced topics similar to Blair electives. You can either apply to the magnet program for 9th grade, or if RM is your home school you can join the diploma program in 11th.

The W schools may offer math beyond BC Calculus, but they won't have the concentration of top math students that Blair and RM have due to the magnets.

I think Poolesville's magnet is a mirror of Blair's. You would probably have the same opportunities there that you would at Blair, but I'd check with the school directly about exactly what classes are offered and who is allowed to take them.

For High School magnet programs you need to apply in the fall of 8th grade, although some students at magnet schools can take magnet classes even if they're not a magnet student, as long as they meet the prerequisites.

Here's a link to the MCPS page about their special programs:

Many HSs offer MV Calculus.

Blair and Poolesville Magnets use their own curriculum for all levels of math that goes beyond MCPS's curriculum and AP. I do not know how that compares to IB math.

If You select a rental in Blair, RM or Poolesville, your DC can sign up for any magnet class. No need to be accepted into the magnet, in case you move here after magnet test. I heard there are also kids tested in before summer because they moved to MC in the summer. Anything is possible but you need to contact the school.

What is 'technology institute'? MIT?

This is only somewhat true. At RM you can take some IB electives if you are not in the IB program but not core classes. At Blair you can take some classes if you have the prereqs and there is space after the magnet kids have registered. You can not take the freshman and sophomore math/science curriculum.

This is only true if there is space in the magnet class and it works for the child's schedule.

Where are you coming from OP? Also the magnets are test-in only.

At Blair the required 9th and 10th grade Magnet classes only have Magnet students. The 11th and 12th grade Magnet electives are open to everyone as long as they have room. My child typically has one or two non Magnet students in each of his Magnet electives.
Also the math teachers are amazing and the math curriculum is very thoughtful and thorough. If your child is a math kid they should definitely apply to Blair.

Here is a profile for Wooton. SAT mean math score is 633
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/woottonhs/counseling/school-profile-updated-2016.pdf

Blair’s mean math score for the entire class is 576
https://mbhs.edu/departments/counseling/BlairProfile.pdf
The mean score is for the entire senior class of course (approximately 700 students).
If memory serves me I believe the average Math SAT score for the 100 Blair Magnet students is typically between 780 and 790
