| Hi there, outside of the SMACs, am I understanding correctly that if you want to take multivariable calculus/linear algebra you have to take a bus and do this at Montgomery County Community College? or is that just for BCC? Any Whitman or WJ or Blair non-magnet parents have experience on this front? I'm glad DC seems to have found a groove with math, and I did a really accelerated track myself as a kid, but having to travel to another campus seems too much. |
| No you don’t if classes are offered. |
+100 This |
| Many, probably most, MCPS high schools offer math beyond calculus. The state requires four years of math, and many kids finish calculus in 11th grade. So the school has to offer something else for 12th grade. |
But a lot of times AP Statistics could be used to fill that 4th year. MVC will only be offered at a school if they have enough kids to take it, which means enough kids taking AP BC Calc in 11th grade. Some schools won't be able to support it. |
Nearly every (MCPS) high school will have close to 500 or more seniors. Even if only ten percent took calculus BC in 11th grade, and then some of those 50 took Stats senior year, there would still be enough for a MVC or linear algebra class. We went to DCC open houses last year, so became familiar with various schools. Northwood offers math beyond BC and stats. If Northwood can support it, I’m sure many other schools can as well. |
WJ offers MVC. My senior starts tomorrow. The teacher, Mr. Choi, is hard-core, but my senior and many others in Calc BC last year got 5s on the exam and said it was a breeze compared to the class. Just looking at the websites, B-CC offers MVC (as they term it, calc w/apps, multivariate/diff eqns on the math department page). Whitman also offers MVC. I only poked around for a few seconds and didn't see the course bulletin for either school. |
Immediate PP. Interestingly, I think different schools must set different prerequisites -- at WJ, you have to take Calc BC, but at Whitman, there's a summer math packet for students who are going from Calc AB into MVC. |
| Churchill offers MV, but kids take BC calc as a pre-requisite. |
| Every kid who takes Algebra in 7th gets to MV (unless they opt for Stats)..it is not unusual |
What happens to kids who take Algebra in 6th? |
I think this has become very uncommon. 4 years of math in HS is still required. I think they would have to go to MC |
Plenty of kids take AB Calc and then BC. Or AB and then Stats. Or BC and then Stats. In addition, since math beyond BC isn't a requirement they can use that spot for an extra science or history or art. |
My understanding is that 4 years of math is required unless a student has finished calc. But if a kid really didn't want to go to MC, there are other options in the building. They just aren't options that are the next step in a sequence, they're off to the side like Stats or AP Stats. |
Math is required all 4 years regardless of the level. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/1025.19_GradReqAtAGlanceClass2020_Flyer.pdf |
