Do you know of any situations where student got into "reach" schools but not safety schools?

Do you know of any students (either your own kid, or maybe the kid of a friend or neighbor) where they were accepted at highly selective schools but ended up NOT getting accepted at schools that were meant to be safeties? Do safety schools ever deny a student because they know a student of that caliber is only using them as a safety, and they'd rather save acceptance for those they think will likely go there?

D’s classmate was rejected or waitlisted at UMichigan and is now attending Brown. Another was denied or waitlisted at UMichigan and is now attending U Of CA Berkeley. Yes, Michigan does this.

It happens all the time-yield protection. Those high stats students are frequently waitlisted.

DD got into Penn (where she attends) but was waitlisted at Skidmore and Davidson. I know Davidson is not exactly safety bc of its selectiveness but her stats were above their 75th percentile. She was admitted to other match and safety schools but our experience was colleges waitlist if they dont think a high stats kid will come and want to protect yield.

Not if they were true safeties. I have only heard people being rejected from their “safeties” when they were confused or did not do their homework.

I would not consider UMich a safety from out of state for anyone.

Considering the high cost for out of state students, it’s a safety. Who would attend UMichigan for the price of Brown or Yale?

What would you consider a safety?

Yes. A school is trying to attain a certain level of diversity. In any crop of applicants, even in a school with a 6% acceptance rate, they may be short on some of that diversity. Thus, a kid could might get into Brown (7% acceptance) but not UMichigan (30%), if that kid's qualifications are in relative short supply in the Brown applicant field.

You can spin it anyway you want. But no way a student holding a ticket to Brown or Yale will be choosing Michigan for the same price.

My DD didn't get into her safety but got into all the other 7 schools she applied to. I'm pretty certain she must have screwed up the application.

Who said they would choose Michigan? I'm just saying that they may get into Brown and not Michigan. It happens.

How can you screw up the application? Isn't every application the same with the Common App? What additional information could be screwed up?

Yes. My DC had a sort of donut hole acceptance rate. Yes at reach: Davidson, UPenn, Wellesley, no at Wake, Duke, Emory, yes at safeties.
