I didn't want to be caught up in the drama of a hurricane that is far away from us, but now this is looking to be a really bad one. CNN is now saying it may be a Category 4 when hitting Florida, and most recently saying it may be almost as bad as Hurricane Andrew.
If you have friends/family on the east coast of Florida, what are their thoughts? Are they hunkering down with lots of supplies/planning to evacuate? So often, it seems Floridians plan to ride out hurricanes/blow them off. Will (most) people be fully prepared for this one, or do we have an upcoming disaster? |
I am from Florida. Everyone I know is planning to ride it out
The issue is you never know where it is going to hit. I imagine people who look like they are in the direct path will go to shelters when the hurricane reveals its true trajectory. Most people have hurricane shutters that will make it safe to shelter in place. |
Is this your first time watching hurricane coverage? They often discuss the worse case scenario. Nobody really knows what the impact will be until 24 hours out. Storms can and do change course and strength.
I do know however that a big cruise ship that was scheduled to return to FL on Sunday has been redirected and won't return until Wednesday. |
I'm working with someone in FL right now. He's wfh today. |
Be careful not catastrophize. Media tend to do that. |
I’m currently in Orlando and flying home today. Disney is telling current guests to make sure they have water and food in their room, especially if they’re in a room that is not connected to the main bldg. |
My brother, who lives in south Florida, is out of town at least through Labor Day, at his second home in the NE. A few friends have left town and joined him there. |
I follow a Disney travel Facebook page, and people are posting pics of an empty park. Someone posted a pic showing Aladdin and Jasmine riding a ride with guests. |
I’m living on the east coast of south Florida now. My husband works in a hospital and is required to go in starting Sunday morning and stay throughout the storm. I’m 7 months pregnant and am taking our two dogs to a hotel in Orlando. Not a great choice, but better than being in the direct path of it when it’s still a category 4. Holding we don’t lose power in the hotel, I know for sure our house will! |
I'm OP. Really? Huh. I have a friend there now, and she has posted about one million photos ![]() |
Where in South Florida are you? We have a condo in Palm Beach, and we’re a bit worried (more concerned about the storm surge because of the car we have parked in the garage). |
I'm in Orlando and no one is blowing this off. I live in a house that has a tile roof and basically made of cement block as the structure, and so we're not worried about damage to our house, but flooding.
Hang in there pregnant PP! I wish I could give you our number here in case you run into any difficulty! |
Buses looked pretty full leaving the resort this morning plus our hotel was full. |
We were there a few years ago during a hurricane, and we stayed on property. They were good about having water to sell, and they prepared these boxed lunches they were selling. The food courts and gift shops were sold out of all food, board games, books, coloring supplies. Disney actually made it fun. The parks were closed but they had characters at the resorts for photo shoots, they had games. In a way, you’d hardly know a hurricane was coming if it weren’t for how well they battened down the hatches! Everything tied down. They made it fun until the last possible moment, and then we all rode it out. |
It’s not supposed to hit Florida until late Tuesday. Why would he be working from home today?? |
