Imagine now it wasn't the police who came along and took the kids.

Clearly the 10 yr old and 6 yr old aren't equipped to deal with situations like the parents believed.

Clearly the biggest threat to these kids are the police and CPS.

I think the parents are the biggest threat to the kids. Why would you put your kids in that situation?

The parents didn't put the kids in that situation. The police and CPS did that.

Nope. The parents could have reasonably forseen this might happen after last time. I don't disagree with their parenting philosophy, but they need to fight their own fight and not use their kids as pawns in their adult agenda.

I don't think that anybody could have reasonably foreseen that the police would stop the kids and take them into custody for 6 hours, without even telling the parents where they were.

I still don't understand why the kids didn't call their parents if they were responsible and mature enough to look after themselves?

Totally agree. Sunday was a beautiful day. It was a real family day for us. We went to see the cherry blossoms and enjoyed a playground and scootering and lunch. We didn't just ditch the kids at a playground. I enjoy watching my kids play.

I can't get over the assumption that the only reason you'd let your children go somewhere by themselves is that you hate spending time with them.

Have you ever been taken into police custody? How many phone calls did they allow you to make, and when did they allow you to make them?

Totally agree. Something needs to be done with about the parents. Is it a 3 strikes and you're out policy for parents too?

And sooooooo helpful to the children too!

Nothing keeps a childhood full of potential like two parents in jail for the crime of letting your child walk on a public street.

Isn't that just in North Korea or somewhere like that?

You can start with the parents.

Some parents never learn.

There were already told this exact thing (walking home alone) was NOT okay. Thick headed much?

The part of this story that bothers me most is that the kids were picked up by the police around 5 pm and then held them in their car until 7pm before transporting them to CPS, presumably parked on road between the park and their home. The parents said they expected the kids to be back by 6pm.

While we can argue all day long about whether free range parenting is legal or not... what the heck did the parents due from 6pm-7pm when their kids were missing.... they obviously did not look for them on the way to the park because they would have found them right there with the police officers... they didn't go look for them until they got a call at 8pm from CPS... If my kids were missing for even 15 minutes I would have been frantically looking for them and flagged down the cop i saw on the way to the park they were playing at...

Seems like anything else is better than the 2 parents they have now.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Why didn't the parents look for them? Too busy reading and enjoying their wine?

Maybe the parents did go looking, saw the kids with the police, knew they were safe, and decided to let this whole thing play out for maximum media coverage...

BTW, you can get married at 15 in some states with your parent's permission.

You can get married at 15 in Maryland if you're pregnant or have given birth.

So maybe 15 is old enough to babysit?

And a kid is way more likely to get pregnant at 15 if she is lacking in adult supervision!

In that case, 15 isn't old enough to babysit either. In fact, a 15-year-old needs a babysitter. Wow, is this getting complicated.

A 15 year old doesn't need a babysitter but does better when involved in adult supervised after school activities. Kids who are home unsupervised for hours after school every day are more likely to get involved with drugs or alcohol or get pregnant. Kids do better when they have adults who are actively involved in their lives.

Let's just for a minute think like the kids. Why do they really want to go to the playground by themselves?

Answer: To get away from their parents or exercise independence and show maturity?

They need a new lawyer. Their attorney has told them that the term "unsubstantiated child neglect" has no legal meaning..

But oh does it.. it means they have an eye out for additional incidents and one little slip up and the kids are taken away. This was a calculated move to force the hand of CPS and create a media frenzy. They are lucky they got the kids back that night... they may not be that lucky in the long run.

Maybe the parents are actually carnivorous reptilian humanoids who arrived on Earth on huge, saucer-shaped motherships.

For CPS to take the children away, CPS would have to decide that it's in the best interests of the children to live in foster care instead of with their parents -- right? Do you think it would be in the best interests of the children to live in foster care instead of with their parents?
