You can get married at 15 in Maryland if you're pregnant or have given birth.

So maybe 15 is old enough to babysit?

And a kid is way more likely to get pregnant at 15 if she is lacking in adult supervision!

Imagine now it wasn't the police who came along and took the kids.

Clearly the 10 yr old and 6 yr old aren't equipped to deal with situations like the parents believed.

Clearly the biggest threat to these kids are the police and CPS.

I think the parents are the biggest threat to the kids. Why would you put your kids in that situation?

The parents didn't put the kids in that situation. The police and CPS did that.

Totally agree. Something needs to be done with about the parents. Is it a 3 strikes and you're out policy for parents too?

Well, look, I am sure that there are some 10 and 6 year olds who the situation would be fine for. But that's not how CPS and the law works. They don't judge whether an individual kid can do something alone, they base it on what is determined to be appropriate for the majority of kids. Who knows, maybe some 13 year olds are tall and would be awesome drivers, but we still don't give them learner's permits.

Regardless of how you feel about letting the kids go to the park alone, you've got to admit that they screwed up this time. Their prior involvement with CPS obviously didn't phase them. I suspect this time it might.

Question: why don't they just take their kids to the park? It was gorgeous outsude this weekend. What on earth are the parents so busy with at home? I suspect they simply aren't involved parents. They're probably at home reading.

You know who really screwed up, though? CPS and the police.

As to why they didn't just take their kids to the park -- my kids (who are 8 and 11) really like going to the playground by themselves. I assume that their kids do too. I honestly don't know what to tell my kids now about what to do if somebody gets nosy, or if the police show up to take them away.

If it's against the law --- and the cops and CPS told them so --- then the parents screwed up. So now a judge will teach them a lesson.

I totally agree. Let the judge decide.

Jail them for what, exactly? Have they been charged with a crime?

I wonder if the Meitiv kids were "big for their age" rather than "small for their age" if they would have been stopped in the first place? They look pretty tiny in the photos.

Nope. The parents could have reasonably forseen this might happen after last time. I don't disagree with their parenting philosophy, but they need to fight their own fight and not use their kids as pawns in their adult agenda.

We used to think that it was fine for almost all, if not all, 10-year-olds and 6-year-olds. And in fact it was. But now it's not? Are 10-year-olds and 6-year-olds different these days?

Jailing them would be frivolous.

I don't think that anybody could have reasonably foreseen that the police would stop the kids and take them into custody for 6 hours, without even telling the parents where they were.

Maybe so. When I was 11 years old, people in my neighborhood felt it was ok to hire me to babysit their infants. It probably wasn't.

Totally agree. Sunday was a beautiful day. It was a real family day for us. We went to see the cherry blossoms and enjoyed a playground and scootering and lunch. We didn't just ditch the kids at a playground. I enjoy watching my kids play.

In that case, 15 isn't old enough to babysit either. In fact, a 15-year-old needs a babysitter. Wow, is this getting complicated.

Why wasn't it? Did anything bad happen?
