Schools with a Good Business School and Music Program

Anonymous
DD is thinking she wants to do something like music marketing or writing music for advertising as a career. She doesn't want a conservatory but wants a school with a strong business school as well as a good music/arts program where she can become stronger in music. She's thinking about applying as a Marketing or Communications (I know this is Arts/Sciences) major with a minor in music. Strong student, strong test scores (but not ivy good). She is thinking of a smaller school as opposed to a large state school at this point. As an example, she loved Davidson but they don't have a business school (but that is not necessarily a deal breaker). Just hoping for some suggestions as to schools we may not have thought of that would be a good fit. Religious schools are fine and doesn't have a strong preference for north or south of DC....but preferably more east coast or midwest. Thanks in advance for any guidance you might be able to provide!

Indiana University Kelley direct admit & Honors program. Jacobs School of Music is exceptional.

I can’t think of any smaller institutions with strong music and business opportunities.

I know Nashville isn't East Coast/Midwest, but you need to check out Belmont University. It sounds like a *perfect* fit.

I would second IU. We toured there this summer. Both business and music programs are excellent, and it’s a beautiful campus. I had never been to Bloomington before and wasn’t sure what to expect but was very surprised by how much my DS & I liked it. It’s a fun, vibrant college town.

Miami Ohio maybe?

+3 to IU. I had a neighbor in my old neighborhood who was a music major at the Jacobs School of Music at IU with a second major in business at the Kelly School. It was a good combo and he works in a field that combines both now.

NYU?
I don't have a senior but a friend's kid wants to go there to study the business side of music.

Maryland's music program does not include the kind of coursework OP's DC would be looking for.

She will want to look for schools that offer a minor in music business or music industry that is open to non-music majors. Almost any school will offer a general music minor. Some schools, like Jacobs, may not have open admissions for certain programs, so she should check requirements to see if any audition or portfolio is required.

University of Miami, NYU, Syracuse and USC are known for their music business majors, but I'm not sure of their offerings for minors. JMU has a music industry major and minor in the event that you don't have unlimited funds or a kid with high stats.

We have a friend who is majoring in the business of the music industry at Emerson in Boston. Not sure exactly what the major is called, but something like that. She absolutely loves it and they have access to internships at record companies, etc. Definitely check it out.

USC. USC's Marshall School of Business is in ranked in USNWR's top 10 undergrad biz programs while Niche ranks USC #5 for music.

Exactly! It has quite a decent business school and an exceptional music school for instrumental and orchestral studies in addition to those who want to want to study musicology.
