Any tj kids go to umd?

Do they get scholarships? Wondering if my ds should consider umd since it’s ranked better than uva and vtech for cs. Thoughts?

Read this re scholarships. https://www.admissions.umd.edu/finance/freshman-merit-scholarships

Doesn’t TJ publish where graduates are accepted or attend?

Yes some do. As for the scholarship, they have to compete with MCPS magnet kids. Tough competition.

My non-TJ FCPS student received the maximum President's scholarship last fall with just decent grades so I imagine a strong TJ student would be in the running for that plus the major awards.

I anticipate any TJ student whose divorced parent lives in MD would be smart to apply and benefit from in-state tuition.

it doesn't work like that - you need to attend school (as in high school) in the state from which you are applying.

I think OP is asking about Banneker-Key. That’s the full ride given to a select group of scholars at UMD each year. Maybe 100 or so each year? But not based solely on academics - they look at the whole picture. Same for Honors College.

Why would you think that is what OP was asking about? OP didn't even mention scholarships. She mentioned CS.

My understanding is that it is enough for the parent in the desired state to list the child on their tax return. I don't know all the details, but several friends have been sending their older children in-state where the second parent lives forever, so there must be a loophole.

They send about 8-10 a year. I think most get scholarships to at least bring it down to in state.

DS is at UMD and in Honors College with the B-K kids. Seems like the ones he’s friends with are from Maryland (from all over). But it seems like lots of OOS kids have Presidential scholarships.

OP - your kid won’t know unless he applies! But take a visit and look at the brand new CS building (actually CS has like a mini-campus now). Has to be the nicest in the country.

MD has a very good CS program. Much better than UVA or VaTech.
