Bad stories from child hood

Anonymous
My mother has been kind enough to tell me that the neighbors shot my cats eye out when I was a child because they didn’t like me.
I was told at the time he injured himself in a accident. He lived with just one eye until I was in college. At this point30 years later I’m not sure I needed to know that I was such a bitch in 3rd grade that they shot my cat’s eye out.
I already knew about the vandalism and spray painting about me around the same time.
I just don’t understand the need to tell me now.

You think that story is about how big of a b*tch you were in 3rd grade?

It's about how crazy your neighbors were. They were CRRRRRAAAAAZYYYYY. Your parents shielded you from their craziness. You should be grateful and it shouldn't have any impact on you at this point.

Op, breath. You are a bit dramatic.

How so. I enjoyed my clueless life not knowing how my cat was injured

This. But it sounds like your mother has presented this as a "they did this because they didn't like you" instead of "those neighbors were insane". It's that the neighbor were insane.

NP. It's a long dead cat with one eye. The story should not change how you enjoy your life.

Are you internalizing that you were a b***ch in 3rd grade? Is that what you are taking from the story? That’s a reaction that reflects that you haven’t made peace with your childhood, and it’s not rational. The only takeaway is that your neighbors were bats**t crazy and perhaps criminally insane and you’re lucky you got out alive, sheesh.

Also — not sure why all these later you’re unable to handle the reality of what happened to your cat. Your mom protected you them, as she should have, but honestly there shouldn’t be a need for her to protect you now( you’re an adult and this was years ago.

Sorry to be harsh — but giving you a reality check.

Yes and no. The fact that OP walked away from the story with the interpretation that it was all about her, rather than a pretty terrible injury to a family cat at the hands of crazy neighbors, says a lot about OP.

OP, was this a first, or does your mom tend to dredge up other painful stuff from the past? If it’s a pattern, and it feels like she’s trying to get a rise out of you, time for some boundaries. If it was a poorly considered story time, let it drop. Glad the cat lived past the injury though.

Why is everyone jumping on the OP? It sounds like her mom actually said, “remember your cat that lost its eye? It didn’t get injured in a cat fight like I said when you were little. Our neighbors shot your cat because they didn’t like you.” If that’s the case, OP isn’t making it all about herself. And it’s not necessarily the neighbors who are crazy. If they really did shoot a cat to get revenge on a 3rd grader, yeah, they’re nutballs. But mom’s who dredge up crap like this for no reason, in my experience, tend to be revisionists, changing the story to suit their moods.

It sounds like the mom wanted to hurt OP without being accused of being mean, so she brought up ancient history and tweaked the story. When OP gets upset, she can’t be mad at mom, because mom didn’t shoot the cat. The neighbors did. Even though anyone in their right mind can see that telling OP the neighbors shot her cat because she was a terrible child isn’t a good idea.

My mom used to pull crap like that with me. She’d “accidentally” tell me something hurtful someone said about me from years past. She was always either trying to bring me down or trying to drive a wedge between me and the other person.

This. Plus your old neighbors were completely nuts.

I'm sorry, OP. You had crazy people in your childhood, inside your house and out.

Thank you. This is what I was getting at. Yes, randomly within the past two years she brings things up and drops them on me out of nowhere. We weren't even talking about cats when she did thisn one.

OP, take some of the critical comments with a grain of salt. It sounds like they have normal parents so can’t see or comprehend what this is really about. You know your mom. If she’s a complete nut, it’s possible she even made up the twist on this story.

OP, maybe you were annoying as a kid, most kids are. Doesn't excuse, whatsoever, the neighbors for hurting your cat (they should have been arrested). But let's face it, kids often are self centered, rude, annoying, and can be a-holes, all of which are normal. My kids certainly are, I probably was as a kid too.

Do you think you only farted sunshines and rainbows as a kid? I don't know how your mother worded it the story to you, but I am not understanding why you are so upset that your mother may have said you were annoying or mean as a kid for a period of time. It's called life. Sorry about your cat.
