At what age did you stop doing hand me downs?

DD2 wears DS4's hand me downs. His old clothes make up about 70% of her wardrobe. Since he's a boy, the colors are darker, but we mostly kept his bottoms and some shirts. We've bought her some girly things, but there are some days she probably looks like a tomboy (currently wearing girl's top with khaki shorts and just stopped). She's just now developing an opinion and I notice she will ask for pink when she does care. When do people usually stop doing hand me downs for different genders? The boys pants seem better made so I like those better and she doesn't seem to mind her brother's old PJs. I plan to keep putting a set of hand me downs in the bin at her daycare, since I can leave a set that's a size bigger.

12DD likes under amour, Nike, and the boys section of old navy. 9DS is the recipient of her hand me downs.

She started wearing my sneakers last week. I’m not that fond of them as they hurt my feet so she just got hand me down sneakers.

So in short, you do it as long as it works.

My kids are 7 and 9 and the younger still likes to wear them, but only certain pieces. I ask her if there’s anything she wants before I donate the rest.

If she has an opinion and is asking for other clothes, then it is time to stop with the hand me downs. Keep the PJs, just don't buy any new ones for her so she doesn't know the difference, but let her help you pick out new shirts and maybe some shorts/skirts/dresses. I get saving money but the good news is that Carters always has sales, Target is not that expensive, and there are consignment shops you can check out to save even more money.

I was a Tomboy so that would not have bothered me all that much.

When she has an opinion on what she wears.

Hm, my kid still loves hand-me-downs and she's 6.5. I don't know when the embarrassment or whatever will set in!

My boys are 8 and 10 and 8yo wears everything older DS wore. Of course we toss work out and faded clothing.

Your situation is different because you have a boy and a girl.

I also have a daughter and she wore a few sleep sacks and onesies when she was an infant but that’s about it. She doesn’t wear her brother’s hand me downs.

I have seen some girls in elementary in obvious boy hand me downs and it looks a bit odd. The cuts and styles are different. My daughter wears leggings mostly.

Even though my daughters don't wear a ton of leggings, I agree with this. The girls in elementary with big brother's hand-me-downs look out of place. Shirts sort of work because a lot of elementary girls wear pretty loose shirts, but pants/shorts definitely stick out. Even longer girls' shorts have a different cut than boys' shorts.

Once they get into T sizes, boy and girl are shaped very differently.

DD9 still wears pants and T-shirts from her older brother.

She chooses what to keep from his stash of outgrown clothes, and I give away the rest.

MY DD (12) now has 2 pairs of my sneakers.

(I don't mean the kids, I mean the clothing. The girls' pants are more leggings, while the boys' are more joggers, and the shorts for boys are much longer.)

We are French and many pants are Jacadi or some other French brand - there isn’t that much difference between girls and boys clothes. I had a hard time with boy clothes in the US when DS was little, they were all so garish and ugly.

I have a DD8 and a DS5. He's still wearing some of her handmedowns, but only a small set -- t-shirts mostly, occasional shorts, snow boots, snow pants, mittens.

I actually don't care for the way little girls' shorts are cut. Those bubble shorts did not fit DD appropriately, we stuck with DS' hand me downs. I may switch to one of the gender neutral brands to fit her frame.
