Dems now targeting mcps school names

Multiple schools named after slave owners . Also the county is named after a slave owner

Okay. So what?

It was just a request for information about the status of school names. There's no specific plan to rename everything. Why is information bad?

They’ll go after Churchill too

Because spending money to write a report on who owned slaves is a massive, irresponsible waste in a district that doesn’t have enough money to educate kids.

And you know who else owned slaves—Washington, Jefferson, etc...are we renaming everything named after them?

Well, a sane person would willingly engage in a conversation about WHY the person is being honored and how we reckon with the full truth of their legacies.

But you do you, dad. I know you're not "a racist." People are just TAKING THINGS TOO FAR.

DP. But where does it end- as PP asks will we be renaming things with Washington and Jefferson too?

I also agree that with all the other issues MCPS has right now, this is a complete waste of time/resources.

They never even teach the kids about the people after whom the schools are named anyway. I’d be in favor of just numbering them.

Or, more accurately: The BoE decided on a broader study to review the history of school facilities’ namesakes. A committee of MCPS staff members, Montgomery County historians and student researchers from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, did the review.

I'm fine with this. Why do you object?

You can postpone your objections to renaming Montgomery County until there's a serious proposal to do so.

Eighth graders in MCPS learn about Washington and Jefferson in USH. Many of my students last year were shocked to learn that Washington not only owned slaves, but tried to find and reenslave ones who ran away.

Why not?

There are plenty of immigrants who aren't particularly attached to the old names. We are foreigners, and wouldn't want to insert ourselves in such decisions unless we have a green card or become American, but honestly... why not?
