How to handle offers

Anonymous
rising 6th grade dd plans to try out for a few teams. part of what she is looking for is who will potentially be on a team with her. Does she know anyone? Is she comfortable with the other girls on the team?

She received an offer from a team just now. She has until 6 pm tonight to accept or reject the offer. But she still has a couple tryouts coming up. What to do?

We are comfortable with the location of practices and DD seemed to click with the other girls. So leaning toward accepting. Select or Club?

What club is it for?

None of the big ones (Capital, Pride, Stars, M&D). DD most likely will not play at the collegiate level. She just wants to improve her game and have fun.

Select. DD didn't know anyone else at tryouts and she said they all already seemed to know each other. She doesn't want to be in a position where she feels like an outsider on the team. Everything else seems really good.

My DD was also offered select. She didn't know anyone going in, but she is an extrovert LOL. I wouldn't worry about that as I spoke to a few moms at the tryout that didn't know anyone else there either. She will get to know her teammates during practices, etc.

I have to say this post makes me kind of sad. I know you have good intentions but "most likely will not play at the collegiate level??" She is in 6th grade! I have a daughter who played in college. I have coached kids that were not the most skilled or most athletic in middle school who flourished later and went on to play in college. Some girls are late to develop the coordination especially the taller girls. Once they hit high school it all comes together. However, I think all kids in 6th grade should want to play at the highest level. There is nothing wrong with a player setting high goals. 6th grade is too young to make conclusions. I hope she finds a good team and an encouraging coach.

Will you just not attend any other tryouts?

I think she will attend the other tryouts as it is good practice anyway. We might go ahead and accept and see what else materializes. We realize this is a financial risk, but we don't want to walk away from this offer.

Assuming this is for Bethesda so she’d be missing the other tryouts this weekend. If you all like the program go for it and try not to second guess yourself

I know a guy who played Duke lacrosse, and he didn’t even pick up a stick until high school.

Say yes, then go to the other tryouts, and if you get a better offer, pull the plug on the first one.
