Okay people, tell me about Sewanee

My son is interested, though we haven’t visited yet. Drawn by what appears to be solid academics, reasonable prospect for entry, a beautiful campus, friendly southern vibe, and warmer weather. Love to hear thoughts on the personality of the place. Quiet kid on the shy side who likes computer games and wants to major in computer science.

There are many Sewanee threads on here already

Sewanee is not the place I’d go for that.

Peaceful, rural campus but Nashville isn’t too terribly far for flights and the occasional visit.

We visited last summer and it's more isolated and small than we were expecting. Nashville and Chattanooga, while within driving distance, aren't that close There's also (probably because of this) a large Greek and drinking culture. I can see Sewanee being attractive to a certain kind of student, but it's off our DD's list.

DS strongly considered it and got a very attractive merit award. It is absolutely beautiful and surrounded by a huge nature preserve that is owned by the university. It is very remote though and I'm not sure how a kid not into the outdoors would do. DS eventually decided he wanted something a big larger. I'd say if you were looking for the LAC experience and to stay, or be in, the South it's a good option. I'd also say schools like Centre and Belmont might be similar, but not as rural.

(I wish everyone would stop about the "drinking culture" with respect to all schools. Put a bunch of 18-23 year old young people together - anywhere - and there's gonna be a drinking culture. Jesus, were you people never young?)

OP here. Thanks for taking the time to post. Possible to share your son’s stats? Mine is a good-not-great student within striking distance of a 1400.

As opposed to what? A Leftist, PC, gay/trans loving NESCAC?

It seems to be a good choice for kids who aren't quite ready for the complete freedom that college offers. They give a little more "hand-holding." For example, the course selection process where the student makes a list of 12 courses and then the school picks 4 courses from that 12 as your semester schedule.

"Academic Guides will build you a balanced schedule of four classes from the twelve you select. They will do so based on the preferences and interests you express on your Course Selection checklist item, and will also keep information in mind from your academic inventory, student life requests, athletics and more."

That would drive my kids crazy, but it's worked well for one kid I know who goes there, who's a little on the immature side.

I have a problem with the LGBT agenda being shoved down people’s throats

The drinking culture can be significantly different at different schools. My children grew up in Sewanee and attended college elsewhere and reported that the drinking cultures on their campuses were significantly milder than Sewanee's.
