Gym etiquette - am I wrong? wwyd?

At my gym, there's a movie room. I go in sometimes because it's cooler than the regular gym floor, and definitely cooler than outside. When I go in, there's a couple of people in there, and the volume is WAY up. I think to myself--fine, they were here first. They leave, and since it's just me alone in there, I turn the volume down some. It's not muted, you can definitely hear it- but enough so the walls and floors don't vibrate with the bass.

3 minute later, some new guy comes in and turns it back way, way up. I think that's super rude. First come, first serve, and you don't adjust the volume if there are already people in there. Since I was right in front, I know he saw that someone else was in the room.

I would be whatevs and put in my work and leave when I'm done. I'm not going to the gym to relax and watch a movie...

I wouldn't go into a room and blast the volume without asking, but it sounds like this is the one workout area where people can put on something loud? If people are used to having movies blaring in that room, you might be fighting a losing battle.

Maybe try turning it lower, but not as low as you have been. See what happens when someone new comes in.

The polite thing to do would be to ask "hey, can I turn up the volume?"

I too am having a hard time picturing a movie room at the gym. What gym is this? I have belonged to quite a few and have never seen a movie room

Not OP. But there's a cardio room at the Gold's in Merrifield. Imagine a large dark room with cardio equipment everywhere, a large screen and projector playing movies the whole time.

OP here. This is in the OneLife/S&H chain. It's a small, dark room with maybe 10-12 pieces of equipment. There are always subtitles on (but even then, the volume was up). I just think it's horribly rude to adjust the volume without asking others in the room.

Agree I'm not there to watch a movie - it's a nice distraction, but I'm primarily there to workout. I do appreciate the darker, cooler space.

There is one at the Gold’s in van ness too. It’s so weird
