car for college freshman

DS will start school at GMU in a few weeks and he will be living at home instead of the dorm. He already gets a waver for it. We're getting him a car to drive to and from school this week.

My wife wants to buy him a 2019 Lexus SUV NX300 model but I want to buy him a Tesla Model 3. My wife thinks Lexus brand is much more reliable than Tesla. Thoughts?

My daughter is also starting at GMU and will be commuting from home. She has a 2016 Honda Civic.

If you are that rich, let him stay in the dorms and buy him a new car. Doesn't he already have a car?

Porsche or the new Corvette would be more fitting for a young man.

OP here. He didn't start driving until three months ago. He is living @home instead of the dorm due to medical issues. No, we're not rich. We live very comfortable but definitely not rich.

If you are very comfortable, let him drive a bunch of cars for $20-30K and let him decide. How is this even a question? You really need to crowd source what to buy. What does he want? Start there.

We're a year away - probably a 10 year old Japanese hatchback.

Lol. Get him a bicycle. Better yet, let him buy a bicycle.

You are shortchanging him by not letting him live in the dorms. Spend more on experiences and less on things.
