car for college freshman

I'd get a Macan over the Tesla. Lexus screams mom car to me.

I can't imagine an 18YO boy, for whom you are getting a luxury car, doesn't have a strong opinion on this? My DS knows WAY more about cars than I do. Of course we would not buy him a luxury car at 18, but then we wouldn't make him live at home and/or go to GMU either.

OP here. Such an elitist comment by PP. There is nothing wrong with GMU. He has to live at home due to a medical condition. He is not ready to move into the dorm yet, may be next year. He prefers the Lexus IS350 sport car but his mom is strongly against an 18 YO boy driving a sport car so she wants him to drive an SUV. Yes, he has an opinion on what he wants but his parents are paying for it so we have the final say.

SUVs are dangerous to others. Given that 18 year olds are bad drivers, you’re setting him up for worse consequences when he does hit someone/something. A lower sedan is safer. Or a bicycle.

Is this some kind of joke? Get the kid a civic and save your money for a better college.

If he’s “not ready to live in a dorm yet” then he’s not ready to drive a brand new $$$ car.

And if he does take this $$$ car to college next year, it'll get all dinged up in the parking lot and I guarantee you he'll let some of his idiot friends drive it and who knows what will happen to it!
