I have had my Macbook Air for 7 years and it works great and I use it almost everyday, to do work at home in the evenings or browse the internet, etc. Yesterday it slid off an ottoman and now the trackpad is broken -- its fixed in a permanently depressed position and wont bounce back or respond when I press on it. I have a wireless mouse so when I am sitting at a desk/table the computer still works fine but I cant use it on my lap.
I have a genius appt later today but I am trying to figure out whether I should but a new one or pay to fix it? How much will it cost? Is it worth it for a 7 year old device. I am also slightly worried about getting a new macbook bc I really like the magsafe connection on my current computer; I dont want to have a power chord that can break off inside the computer. |
| A 7 year old computer will likely need to be replaced. |
What do you mean? If your computer is functionally absolutely fine for the stuff that you do on it and is less than (I'd say half) of the price of the 1000 dollar mac air, I'd say keep it. |
I mean my current computer charges through a "magsafe" connection which means if I (or my dog or my kid) trip(s) over the chord it pops off no problem. The new connectors have a slide-in charging port that works faster but it is possible for it to break off in the computer which will cost money to fix. This happened on my 2004 era computer and I highly value the magsafe feature on my older computer and think its silly Apple got rid of it in the name of faster charging. |
| Update from OP and hurrah to Apple geniuses. I just got back from my genius bar appt and the staffer was able to fix my trackpad for free. The cursor was working so he said sometimes the pad slips out of place and stops working if the screw that holds it loosens. He took it in the back and fixed in about 10 minutes. Wohoo! |
I think you mean USB type-C. The EU and others are pushing for this so there is a common standard for power adpaters. |
