Looking for that mid-size SUV that has decent leg room and trunk space but isn’t as big as our Honda Pilot. I’m used to driving smaller cars - think Toyota Matrix. I test drove Honda CR-V, Rav-4, Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson and felt most comfortable driving and parking the Mazda and Hyundai.
I’ve never owned a Hyundai or Mazda before so any thoughts on either car? Is AWD worth it, including the hit on gas mileage, in the DC metro area? Anyone have the Tucson Limited trim line? |
| The 2019 Mazda CX-5 currently has an engine recall on it with no fix yet. I would avoid Hyundais (and Kias) because they has issues with engine fires over several model years. |
| Love our 2016 cx5. Feels like driving a sedan. Gas mileage is fair, I don't think it gets what it's rated for. |
| I have a Tucson, my ex has a CX 5. I haven't had any issues with my Tucson, but the CX5 feels more... substantial. My Tucson has some cheap interior finishes, but nothing I can't live with. The CX 5 feels more spacious and seems to have a little more umpf than the Tuscon when accelerating. Given that they are pretty close in price, I'd go with the Mazda |
| We have a cx5 and it’s held up well, but note it’s very tight with two car seats if that’s an issue for u |
2010–2015 Hyundai and Kia models with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter engines source: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a27053460/nhtsa-investigation-hyundai-kia-fires/ |
Tucson not on the list. "Under investigation are the 2010–2015 Kia Soul; 2011–2014 Hyundai Sonata, Sonata hybrid, and Santa Fe; Kia Optima, Optima hybrid, and Sorento; and 2013–2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport." |
OP here, what were the cheaper interior finishes? |
My point is that they have a history of serious manufacturing issues. I had to have the engine in my Sonata replaced due to a manufacturing defect. It had a bunch of other potentially serious recall issues involving an airbag, transmission, brake lights, etc. |
| I was in the the exact spot a few months ago and decided on a Tucson Ultimate. It has a few more features vs CX5 (though notably absent memory seats) and longer warranty. Mazda does have a nicer interior. Yes, the Theta 2 engine issue might still be there, but the engine has been in production for 8? years now. You have another 10 years of powertrain warranty. Plenty of time to work out all the issues. Just keep up with regular kil changes. |
I have a 2003 Corolla and have had to take it in for airbag recalls numerous times. No car is perfect. |
You may not want to drive any car sold in the US in that case. Is there any manufacturer without a major recall? |
I draw the line at engine fires. Others may have different standards. |
OP here, thanks. |
