DD wants to start using uber as a way to get around. My husband and I are not sure how we feel about it. Any thoughts or opinions on letting children use it? DD is 14, almost 15.

Yes. Our kids use Uber starting F year.

With friends no problem.

Alone, depends, when/where/etc.

No Uber carpool alone.

Go over all the safety tips. (Ask driver "what is my name", etc)

Use by minors is restricted according to Uber:

"A rider must be at least 18 years of age to have an Uber account and request rides. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone 18 years of age or older on any ride. As a driver-partner, you should decline the ride request if you believe the person requesting the ride is under 18."

But then again, this is the DMV where anything goes.

I allow it. Uber Pool only. I track her trip and meet her outside. I also text her when the driver is going to pick up another person.

Uber pool has tons of drunks. My rule is NO Uber Pool.

Only when there is no alternative/emergency. I would rather drive my kid then have her with a stranger.

For my teens at 14, only with a friend. We don't have different rules for boys vs. girls in our house, so that was the rule for everyone.

They could start Ubering alone at 16 but no Uber Pools past midnight because that's when you're more prone to be riding with a drunk person.

Also, at 14 and 15 they still had to have me request the Uber for them so that I could monitor their progress. I sent the driver and car details to them, though. I let them get the Uber app at 16 and added a gift card balance to their account for emergencies, but still preferred to order the Ubers for them so I could track.

Yes, by all means, let's take away this easy alternative for someone who has been drinking and instead have them out there driving drunk.

I get it, you probably live in DC or a larger city where taxis are plentiful, but I'm in a smaller suburb that has one taxi company with a fleet of maybe 5 cars. Even scheduling a taxi here doesn't mean it'll show.

I thought we were talking about kids taking Uber. Not having Uber as an alternative for people who would instead drive drunk. Though I have to say that if Uber's business model were to provide an alternative for people who would instead drive drunk, it would be even worse.

PP was responding to the bolded language. And Uber does provide an alternative to those who might be ok with driving after two or three drinks. Now some of those people Uber instead of assuming they're ok because they didn't drink "that much" so can drive.
