Better skin at 40? Recommend your derm/facial routine

Anonymous
I am in my early 40s, postpartum and my skin looks like hell. As I have lost the baby weight, my crow's feet and marionette lines are back, I have chin breakouts and hair there too. Lovely. I am going for electrolysis for the hair issue, since my last round of laser obviously wasn't permanent. Anyone care to recommend their dermatologist or anti-aging/clear skin routine. I would love to wear minimal makeup--less to sink into the lines--so I want better skin. That is going to be my Christmas present to myself.

Dr. Richard Castiello in Chevy Chase. Worth the drive - I come from VA. A number of medical grade skincare lines and a skincare specialist. He is no-nonsense and very straight forward. Less is more with him.

Also, sunblock, sunblock, sunblock. 365 a year. Must be broadspectrum. Anthelios with the European formula is the best and most effective. You'll have to order it online.

Merry Christmas, OP!

I don't have a rec for a derm b/c I need one, as well. But I can tell you that my skin during pregnancy and PP was not "glowing." I broke out more during my pregnancy than I did my entire life. I used Obagi for a couple months and it really did wonders for my skin. My ob/gyn carried the line, so she prescribed it for me. Good luck!

I have used Murad products in the past, but saw an info-mercial for its new Resurgence line. I got the trial size of the three products, and have been really happy. I have red skin (probably rosacea), sometimes acne, and sometimes dryness, and the beginnings of some lines.

Vivite line from my derm (Agnes Chang in NW DC). Derm is a young mother, so she totally empathizes with women who have post-pregnancy skin issues.

I was not as happy with Dr. Castiello. He mis-diagnosed me--we are not talking about something serious, like cancer, but, still, he missed the mark with me.

OP here. I have seen Castiello in the past--basic stuff--skin cancer check, strange rash on hands, that sort of thing. Also did laser hair removal there, but the hair back...Not thrilled with the practice.

Anyone tried Dr. Battle with Cultura?

Dr. Doshi. in DC. http://www.advancedskinhealth.com/default.asp
She's matter of fact, and knows her stuff. I loved the sun when I was younger and after I turned 40, needed to do some repair work. I've had 2 IPL treatments and my skin looks great! The IPL has nearly removed the sun damage, and smoothed out the fine lines. My pores are invisible. Go see her, she specializes in cosmetic dermatology. Here's a list of the cosmetic services they offer:

Cosmetic Dermatology
• Botox®
• Collagen
• Juvéderm™
• Restylane®
• Laser hair removal
• Laser vein removal
• Laser treatment of photoaging, acne and rosacea
• Chemical peels
• Skin care products

I spent a ton of money on creams and potions hoping that something would work, but in the end, it was the professional advice that worked.

I am 42 and swear by cetaphil (10 dollars at CVS). I had horrible postpartum skin and was getting wrinkles and pimples at the same time. Try it (youve got nothing to lose as you will probably have to wait for an appointment and you can start it today). I have no affiliation with the company but it really worked for me.

What is IPL treatment?

Look carefully at these ratings. You can't make a judgement over only 9 reviews. Typically, it's the angry people who decide to write them.

I am much more likely to believe a recommendation by doctor peers than a rinky-dink sound off website. Dr. Castiello has been ranked as one of the top docs by his peers in Washingtonian.

Silly to even look at one rating for Dr. Doshi. OP, if you love your GP, ask him or her for a recommendation.

My skin is gorgeous. I am almost 39. I had horrible zits most of my life.

I started using Proactiv. It got rid of the zits but made my skin flaky and dry.

So, I started using exfoliating skin pads they sell in drug stores. First I scrub with that (comes pre-soaped) and then I add on the Proactiv.

My skin has never looked better. Clean, clear, fresh-scrubbed looking. I don't have to wear foundation.

I also use an undereye wrinkle cream. Don't remember the name. Regenerist maybe?

One word: Retin-A. It works for breakouts, pores, and wrinkles. You do need a prescription but it's so much better than the over-the-counter stuff, in my experience. Only caveats are that your skin may get worse before it gets better (first 2 months or so), it can make your skin very sensitive to sun exposure, and it can be expensive. Most insurances don't cover it for people over 24 but if you can get your doctor to say you have ongoing acne and other things haven't helped, your insurance may cover. Plus you only use a tiny bit at a time so that tube will last forver. SOOOO worth it.
