| My 8 yr old lab can not stop leaking urine. We have given her two types of meds and straight estrogen to try and control the problem. My house smells like a kennel. I am done. Unfortunately I have a 5 and 8 yr olds that would never understand why she is gone. Would you put her down for this. I am so torn!! I love animals and have had them my whole life. Most have lived well into their teens. That’s what really scares me. She will live and leak forever. It isn’t a little leak, it’s puddles |
| Have you tried dog diapers? And tested her for diabetes? We are living through something similar but I can’t euthanize because there’s still quality of life. My husband wants to. Pee pads all over our house. Sorry it sucks. |
| I would do it, OP. |
| I had a cat with the equivalent of epilepsy who could not walk, only dragging herself around, and I used diapers on her (just bought newborn diapers and cut a hole for her tail) |
OP HERE. yes I have diapers, she is getting an infection from having wet diapers, I feel so bad but what quality does she have. We have another dog that is allowed to roam the house and the peeing dog must stay outside or in her kennel which she pees in and lays in. It's so gross and sad. I am taking her back to vet, but I am going to tell kids she has cancer in case they say nothing can be done.
|
| Can you confine to one room? |
| I would try dog diapers first. if for some reason that didnt work, I would euthanize. |
well If I lived alone, sure. But we have 5 people in my family and no one seems to understand that she is ruining our home. including and probably the worst is my spouse. |
| Truly you have done enough. It’s okay to euthanize. No need to discuss or share with anyone. It’s okay. |
|
I would try everything (another vet, etc) and then end her suffering. Sorry, op.
I’d also consider telling your kids the truth. They’d old enough to understand how crap her life is. She also may constantly be trying to hold out - nonstop discomfort. |
| Agree it’s okay to euthanize her. No quality of life for anyone, poor girl or your family. Your kids will get over it. |
|
op here. thanks for the responses. I feel so bad but I think I don't have a choice
|
| I have a super honest vet who would give me the truth of what to do. What does your vet say to do? This sounds like a terrible problem with no solution. I am so sorry. This is a health issue and I would be honest with the kids. |
This is probably the best suggestion. Go to a specialty vet like Friendship or South Paws for a second opinion. At the very least that way you could convince your spouse you truly tried everything. There may be a surgical option. |

No. It's not o.k. to euthanize her over this! Try doggie diapers, try putting her in a roomy crate or gated off area in your home when you can't watch her.
I have an 8 year old dog who sometimes leaks urine when she is sleeping. She sleeps with a towel or a pee pad under her butt on our bed in between us. We love her so much it has never even dawned on me to euthanize her over something like this. Her quality of life is excellent in spite of her little problem. 8 is not old! Please contact a rescue group if you have seriously given up on keeping her. |
