Deal Summer Reading Assignment

Anonymous
Is it a big deal if a kid doesn't complete the Deal summer reading assignment for incoming 6th graders? I clearly wasn't paying attention and just learned about it, and my kid is away for several more weeks. Honestly I'm not really on board with summer homework assignments so I'm inclined to just skip it.

What happens if a kid doesn't do the assignment?

how on earth can a kid have a assignment from a class that has not started yet?!?!?

Is this a serious question? Have you not heard of email?

I don't think anything but is your child a poor reader?

There are 5 more weeks of summer - mail your kid the book.

My kid read his pre-6th grade Deal book in 2 days.

Well, at Deal every assignment is graded, including summer. And if your student doesn’t turn in an assignment, automatic zero on Aspen. Which is hard to come back from in terms of average grade for the course.

Of course, you *may* have some leeway as to whether it’s actually due first day of school. (Maybe end of first week of school?). But that’s not for you to decide.

In my experience, much easier to have child read book, finish assignment on time.

I'm not sure if you missed anything. We're an incoming 6th grade family and we just learned about it too. The email indicates that this is a graded assignment.

In your situation, I would have your kid complete the book of choice assignment for a book she's already read. The actual assignment options don't look too cumbersome.

Then if you have extenuating circumstances, I would request an extension for completing the assignment for the book from the list they provide.

We also have our Summer booked, including lots of travel, so it's a bit of a pain for us too. We're going to try to get this done in time even though it's tough on short notice.

It's a graded assignment but won't be collected until a week into school.
I agree with the others though--just have your kid read the books. If they take your child more than a few days each, you have a bigger problem than a summer reading assignment.
This "assignment" should be a complete non-issue.

Fifth grade teacher here. We sent that assignment to families way back in early June. Your school dropped the ball. It’s two very easy assignments. They are not due until August 30, which is the Friday of the first week of school. Have your child complete an easy one this week on a book he or she read and then mail a book to you child this week for the other assignment. I would not want to start the year with two zeros.

MS is not ES. You (parent) don’t get to decide to have your kid skip it without consequences.

Send assignment to your kid. Tell them that it will be graded. If they don’t do it ... that’s on them. Don’t put blame on anyone. Just give kid what the information they need to get it done.

It really is an easy lift. Read a book of your choice and read a book from the list (I am confident if you do not read a book from the list - they will accept it)

The assignments are simple enough.

It is graded as a "homework assignment". Homework is 5% of grade for the quarter. So if your do all the others - it is not a big deal.

If you do anything - you will get credit.

Thanks all. I'm pretty sure my school did send something out but I missed it. I'll make sure my kid does it.

What other areas of your child's education don't you like that you will be "inclined to skip?" I can only imagine what will happen when the teacher is "inclined" to give your child a zero.

Homeschool is probably easier.

She sounds like one of the elementary parents I know who skip all HW on the basis of it not being developmentally appropriate, and based on research that doesn't support a link between HW and academic outcomes at the elementary level. The problem with this approach is that kids don't get a chance to get in the routine of HW after school, so middle school can be somewhat of a shock.

Isn’t booked travel a perfect opportunity for a kid to read a book? The actual assignment can literally be done the night before.
