AOC is holding a rally with Jamie Raskin in (the People's Republic of) Silver Spring. Tickets are sold out. Raskin IMO has been rather unclear about whether he's with the Pelosi wing or with the AOC wing of the Democratic Party and maybe this is the answer. |
| There is no such thing as the People's Republic of Silver Spring, OP. |

I'm disappointed in Raskin, who I voted for. I think if you look at his entire district, which is one of those crazy gerrymandered districts going all the way up to Thurmont and the Pennslyvania line, you'll find that most people are moderate Democracts, not Takoma Park progressives. AOC is not who he should be associating with.

| It's People's Republic of Takoma Park, and that's only a little funny. No such thing as People's Republic of Silver Spring, which is a huge city that extends into heavily church-y more upper-county areas like Ashton. |
Oh wow. I like in TkPk and didn't know my district went to the PA line. That is nuts! I see your point, but the real solution is that we shouldn't be gerrymandering districts. |
The MD case of gerrymandering is headed to the Supreme Court (or did they already rule on it? I know it was up recently) but I don't blame Raskin for that. It's not in his control. What is in his control is representing his constituents. I guarantee his constituents in Westminster, Thurmont, and Mount Airy have a lot different views on AOC than those in Takoma Park. He needs to realize this (I just wrote him an email about it actually). |
If this is news to you, then you haven't been paying attention to your congressman. He has been very open about his opinions and actions at least since he was elected in November 2016. And he was re-elected in November 2018 by 68% to 30%. |
Yes, they did. It was in the news. |
True. Silver Spring is basically everywhere east of 355 that isn't incorporated. Downtown Silver Spring is more politically like Takoma Park and DC. As for Gerrymandering, there was a redistricting proposal on the table that showed axing most of the MoCo part of the 6th and ceding the northern counties of the 8th to the 6th. MD-8 would basically be entirely MoCo minus a few upcounty areas, which would mean that Jamie Raskin would be winning his district with 90% of the vote and going as far left as he wants. |
PP and here's what that proposal looked like. Raskin's district effectively eliminates any Republican or Center-leaning areas in MoCo from his district. It would look more like AOC's district.

I hope folks will take the time to read some of the reporting coming out of the detention facilities. This is not "three square meals a day and a roof over your head."
When Rep. Ocasio-Cortez compares the border camps to early stages Nazi Germany, she is spot on.
|
| This is not a rally. It's a fund raiser. Be honest. |
Stand up Democrats and support the outrage. AOC had the courage to, stop trying to polarize yourselves and get it together. She , and the rest of the " squad" are not left wing radicals- stop allowing yourself to be swayed by right wing rhetoric. |

AOC is far from the only Democrat speaking out against the border detention facilities. She is one of many and her efforts to change things haven't amounted to very much. She is attractive, energetic and star power which are all good things but she is being elevated to a fake leadership position which isn't going to turn out well. She hasn't led or done anything. She isn't a great orator or smart policy person, she is a performer.
Fundraisers and rallies are up her alley but its concerning that more substantive young democrats are not rising up. We don't need more performers. |
No kidding! She's been in office for a whole seven months as a first-term Congress member, and she hasn't led anything yet! (I'd put the eyeroll emoticon in, but that would be rude.) |
