They were not hit while jaywalking. They were not hit in the crosswalk. They were sitting on a f**king bench, in a park. "police say speed MAY have been a factor" Well duh. Hard to kill two people when you are driving slowly. We need to stop putting wide streets for more convenient fast driving ahead of safety. |
| This is awful. We need to do something drastically different. The convenience of driving is just not worth our lives. |
| as bench sitters, it is up to you to be 100% vigilant all the time. Only you can prevent a car from running you over on a bench@@ |
What is wrong with you? Two people died. Seriously, I don't care if this is an anonymous forum, have some respect! |
| That is awful. I waddled through that park dozens of times on my way to/from midwives appts at GW. I agree the wide lanes around there encourage people to drive like they're on a turnpike somewhere, not in the middle of a pedestrian city. |
| How much you want to bet a cellphone was involved? |
Sarcasm, I’m assuming. The real disrespect people are those shrugging their shoulders and saying ho hum, too bad, not much we can do about it. |
Have you ever seen a car lose control? It’s impossible to react. If they were walking and the car coming from other side, they may have had a chance. Sitting down on a bench or anywhere, no way. You’re kidding yourself if you think you would have been able to predict and jump out of the trajectory of the vehicle just if you were “vigilant”. Look at this video and imagine there was a bench on the grass. Count seconds from when car lost control and ended on grass. Sit on a bench and see in how many seconds are you able to see a car coming, decide on it’s trajectory, and then clear that area completely. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d2dDVPBloB0 |
| We must ban cars immediately. This would never have happened if the driver had been speeding on an electric scooter. Let's ban benches while we're at it. This never would have happened if these people hadn't been sitting there. |
Good lord, people. PP is expressing sarcasm by saying what many posters on similar threads say about pedestrians and bike riders. Why this has to be explained is slightly troubling .... |
If someone riding an electric scooter had killed someone there would be a movement to ban them nationwide. An SUV driver does this, and its no big deal. Look, we don't have to ban cars, or even SUVs. But we should traffic calm that part of Pennsylvania Avenue, as DDOT has proposed, IIUC, but not yet implemented. Changes like that need to be accelerated in DC and in the suburbs. And when people complain about pedestrians, about scooter riders, and about bike riders, they need to keep some perspective. |
|
Yes, all streets in DC must immediately be reconfigured so as to reduce the likelihood of this ever happening again.
|
| jesus. that is horrible. |
| This is so, so sad. |
And preventable |
