Is it normal to get extremely irritable and depressed during perimenopause

Anonymous
I'm 46 and for the past few month, I've noticed that I can fly off the handle very easily with DH and kids, also a few days per month I will get very depressed. Is this common for perimenopause?

Some irritability and depression, yes. If you are finding that you are having trouble maintaining a baseline, I would consider an SSRI.

Same for me, OP.

It was for me but it gets better.

Not for me, but DH, yes. There really is a male menopause for some.

Yes. I became very angry, irritable, and depressed.

Yes. My depressive days scared me, since that has never been my normal personality. I’ve now been on a low dose birth control for a year and it’s an amazing difference.

Yes, it's such a bummer.

I am not having trouble with depression, but I am super irritable.

Yes, this started happening to me around 45. It is horribly and scary — such depths of sadness. I try to tell myself that it’s hormonal but it doesn’t help. I just have to wait it out. The good thing is seems better the last few months. I’m 47 now.

Oh, I meant to specify that my irritability and sadness was always around ovulation.

Irritability is a sign of depression.

Yes, mine started at 44, menopause at 47, still angry, irritable and increased issues with anxiety and depression at 52. On Zoloft now, which has taken the edge off. Has improved slightly every year.
