How many kids do you know named Ivy?

Anonymous
I'm pregnant with my second girl and really love the name Ivy. This is my grandmother's name, and my first daughter is named after DW's grandmother, so this time it's my 'turn' if we decide haha, but I ADORE this name. She says that "literally every other child in Bethesda is named Ivy" and that there are going to be 5 or 6 in every class, that it's like Jessica or Ashley. I've never met a single other Ivy than my Grandmother.... Anyone?

I don't know any but I do know it shows up on name threads around here pretty frequently. I think it's probably on the uptick but it's no Jessica in the 80's.

According to the SS, the name Ivy has never been in the top 100 for the state of Maryland each year (less than 50 babies), so it's safe to say it's not a popular or common name.

Isn't that Beyonce's girls name?

None, and out of curiosity I just searched the school directory for my kids' DC charter school and there were none on there.

There is a popular kids' book series called Ivy & Bean. Also it's Beyonce's older daughter's middle name.

You can see from this chart http://www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/girl/ivy that it last peaked in popularity in the 1880s, has been increasing in popularity pretty rapidly since 2008, but is still below #100 on the SSN name charts. It wouldn't be shocking if it continued that trajectory and became relatively more popular in high-income areas like Bethesda since it fits a lot of modern trends in baby names for affluent white people--somewhat unusual, a charming "old lady name" vibe, lots of vowels.

Anyway, OP, it is a great name and if you like it, you should go for it. There's no way to avoid having any other kids with the same name as your kid, or it blowing up in popularity after you pick it, or Disney naming a movie character your kid's name. The important thing is that you like the name.

None, and I love it too. Go for it, OP!
