Concerned about buying in WJ cluster because of re-zoning

That never made sense to me.

That's because those kids live in the Town of Kensington, which pays its own extra taxes and whose kids all go to the same elementary school named, in part, after their town.

If the Town of Kensington gets rezoned to Einstein, so will Parkwood and so will most of the kids who currently attend Silver Creek MS (no way Kensington gets rezoned to Einstein and then doesn't go to the middle school right across Connecticut Avenue from KP, bordering the Town of Kensington). And if that happens they need to get rid of ESs zoned for Einstein to make room in an already overcrowded high school. These previously Einstein-zoned ESs will most likely be the lowest performing (Highland, Rock View or Oakland Terrace), because they are closest to Wheaton, WJ and Woodward. If this happens Einstein will be an exceptionally good school because it will have 7/10+ schools like Flora Singer and Woodlin, plus KP and kids near the KP zone that attend Silver Creek MS (North Chevy Chase ES kids).

Rock View is walking distance to Einstein, and its service area includes Einstein. Parts of Oakland Terrace and Highland are also walking distance to Einstein.

Here’s my prediction: New Woodward = Veirs Mill ES, Farmland, Garrett Park, Luxmanor + performing arts magnet + a little extra capacity for growth. I saw that Veirs Mills puts on their own musicals twice a year. They are a Blue Ribbon School and even received a visit from Pres. Obama a few years back. Sounds like they have teachers who do everything right for their kids. They’ll fit right in with the Tilden kids. Woodward is going to be a very special place.

I’ll let the rest of you speculate about what happens to K-P, Einstein etc.

Good call on makeup of Woodward, but if that happens KP would definitely go to WJ because if it didn’t WJ would only have two ESs left (Ashburton and Wyndgate).

Nope sorry ToK resident. KP can't fit into Silver Creek - there's not a lot of extra capacity for expansion beyond the natural increases in the existing ES population as the Chevy Chase Lake redevelopment proceeds. And NCC won't be rezoned to Einstein - its pairing with CCES via Rosemary Hills is too durable and the fight over the Silver Creek boundaries was ugly enough that they won't be able to pull the eastern ES from BCC without serious drama.

Or, WJ is the schools west of Old Georgetown: Wyngate, Ashburton, Farmland, Luxmanor, and Woodward is those east: KP, GP, and two from the DCC.

This. Is. All. Speculation. There are myriad ways it could go.

But if you're accepting that KP could end up at Einstein due to proximity, while acknowledging that a different feeder would have to be moved out of Einstein to make room for KP since its already overcrowded...how does that same logic NOT apply to Silver Creek? Same argument re: proximity and same solution - moving out some other, more distant feeder than the one you are moving in.

The proximity argument is based on the fact that KP is equidistant from both WJ and Einstein. North Chevy Chase Elementary school is about a mile from BCC, but 3 miles from Albert Einstein. Many NCC students (inside the beltway) can walk to BCC. It is one of the closest elementary schools within the boundary to BCC. In addition, that matriculation pattern would be difficult to disrupt because of the pairing with lower income areas (Rosemary Hills in Silver Spring) and the recent fight over splitting the BCC middle schools.

The moco BOE voted to give diversity the highest weight when making these decisions so not all that hard to predict how this will go.

Actually, what the BOE voted on was that "Options should especially strive to create a diverse student body in each of the affected schools." Also, no one knows who will be on the BOE in 2024.

Unless a BOE before 2024 get rid of this resolution, any BOE will have to strive to create a diverse student body in 2024. Based on how demography is shifting in county and how BOE members have to win election, I don't think we are getting rid of this resolution.

When is the community meeting at WJ?

Some kids who go to KP are actually closer to Garrett Park ES. Random observation don’t make a convincing case.

Isn’t Einstein at least in a residential area? WJ is in the middle of ugly mid-rise office buildings off Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda. Seems like it would be a depressing place to attend school.
