Redshirting consequences at Lafayette

We might be moving to the area for a job and my son has a late August birthday. Say for sake where we live he could be in K or 1st. He is currently in 1st but is at K reading level.

Principal and teachers agree that if we move he should be held back and attend 1st again.

He gets additional help at school and outside of school. They do not suggest keeping him back at our current school, but I know of at least one student who was kept back (teachers recommendation) who also had a late summer birthday.

So, does this mean if we move to DC and use DCPS he has to attend 2nd grade and we can't have him go to 1st again?

We might look at private in the future, but there aren't many spots when you move this late.

It is shocking to me because the Principal literally told us she did this with one of her sons when she moved and it made a huge difference.

We have also got advice outside the school system and they say the same thing!

I think a September 30th birthday is too late especially for boys (my school district is end of August). I don't want people jumping on me here, but I feel the schools really do not think what is best for all students.

If you think that your child needs to repeat 1st grade, then go to private for 1st, and come back to public for 2nd.

If it’s age based that wouldn’t work.

It’s crazy to me too. DC Public has some crazy built into it. The crazy has reared its head more often since Covid.

Look into public schools outside of DC such as in MD or VA or privates within. Smaller privates that only go to 8th such as WES and Sheridan are more likely to have space. If they do not ask space, ask them if they have heard of schools that do, since many private school administrators talk to each other. Red-shirted private school kids often turn out so well that the schools insist upon it. DCPS doesn’t want the kids so might as well go where they’re wanted.

Well sure. I’m willing to bet that if I went to kindergarten I’d do great too. Of course kids who are older do better.

Example of the crazy at DCPS that private weeds out.

Isn't the administration in flux at Lafayette again this year anyway? At least on the AP level?

It’s concerning that DCPS let this redshirting practice go on for so long but the enrollment guidelines for K seem very clear, it’s just a matter of enforcing them.

Have they announced who the new AP is going to be? That would likely make a huge difference if they pick the right person.

I thought the current AP was just loaned out? He’s not coming back?

I don't believe so.

I wish they would communicate these things. Our last school, they said which teachers and admins weren’t returning and which were moving grades. Tbf Dr. B never did this either (unless they were retirements).

This is the crazy that privates weed out. When a policy isn’t the best for the students, the policies change.

True, you would think a position as important as AP would be announced but I guess not.

Sorry… It’s “crazy” for someone to say the DCPS should enforce its own guidelines? And what does that have to do with private school? I hope you’re a bot stealing a previous post without understanding the meaning.

Can the private school parents please see themselves out from the DCPS and Charter forum? Go to the Private School forum and complain about us there.

It’s crazy to blindly follow guidelines that are not in the best interest of students. Private schools teach critical thinking.

DCPS enrollment policy is in the best interest of the majority of students. It’s crazy that this is even a debate

They don’t teach critical thinking. It’s a buzz word to make them sound better. Many of the academics are behind public’s. It’s not in kids interests to be held back and not get support for a critical year for their special needs.
