The places with the newer tablet payment devices now all prompt you to include a tip % before paying. You can decline but I always feel like its expected to pay a 20-25%. At a self service counter where the only thing the person is doing is ringing you up it seems unnecessary. I also wonder if the employees get the tip or if I am just making a donation to the yogurt place. |
Tipping culture is out of control. |
Don't feel bad about not tipping. Why the heck should you tip 20%? Why should you tip at a self-service counter?? I've started using more cash as a result of the extreme awkwardness of that tablet payment tip prompt. |
Just push the no tip button? That's what I always do and have never felt weird about it. |
Don’t tip. They’re paid at least minimum wage (unlike waiters) |
No tip for you!
Also, I know it's probably horrible but I do not tip my dog walkers. $20 for a half hour walk? Plus tip? No sir. |
I don't tip for that either. Of course. How is it even a question? If you're going to tip someone then it should be yourself!
Personally, I think it's pretty rare to tip for things like that. Of course, they want you to think that it's normal and expected. That's just better for them. DCUM is not the real world. |
Thanks, PP!
I will no longer feel guilty! |
Agreed. The anger should be directed at employers for what they don't pay their employees rather than consumers/clients/patrons for not supplementing an employee's income. |
They are aggressive about it at a Jersey Mikes near me. I've actually had the person ringing me up comment on not adding a tip. I will never go back to that store again. It's also gross and dirty so there's that as well. |
What was the comment they made?? Did you respond with a rhetorical “Why would I tip you for being a cashier and doing your job?” |
OP here. I have been taking the advice I got here and agree with and decided not to tip at self service counters. This is not going well. I have gotten an eye roll and stink eye twice from someone behind the counter. At the yogurt place where I occasionally take the kids the lady will point out the tip options and say "If you would like to reward my service" with a big ass smile and then either scowl or look completely dejected when I don't tip.
I'm not cheap and I tip full service wait staff very well even when they don't do a good job. This is really bugging me. |
I've worked a number of counter service jobs, and have definitely had times when I bought my groceries with my tips-so I'm not anti-tipping, but it does seem out of control. Some change for a coffee or a dollar for a quick service meal is often fine with me, but places where the lowest default amount is multiple dollars for a sandwich, too much. I will tip 25 cents on square for a coffee, which may make me seem super cheap and crazy, but I'm trying to give the same amount I did before tipping was on a screen. |
Me: you really ought to Encourage your employer to pay you a living wage. I’m not going to be able to make up the gap. |
Yep. Cashier is not a tipped-wage job like a server, so they are getting at least minimum wage, which will be $15/hour pretty soon at least in DC and MoCo. |
