I round off to the nearest dollar via the custom tip. The only takeaway I regularly get is the coffee and the latte at the place I go is 4.32 so I round up to 5.
I do it because I like the staff in there. It's a small shop with great coffee. I wouldn't do it in Starbucks as the baristas are always terrible. I used to be annoyed by tipping and the tipping culture but then I came to realize that while not rich I am more fortunate than many so, I no longer begrudge the tips. Having said that, if I ever had bad service or surly service then I will not leave a tip. There is a Thai place I pop into occasionally for a lunch takeaway and they don't take tips unless you force it upon them. Even when I pay by credit the proprietor always swipes the card and cancels the tip option before switching the screen back to me to sign my name. I find it intriguing as it's a small family run place with wonderful pad thai and one of the few places I'd be glad to leave a 1-2 tip. |
