So my 16 y.o. is driving to her friend's for a sleepover...

and it's her first big drive alone, on the freeways of Los Angeles. She's headed north-east and it would be 35 miles cross town with three freeway interchanges.

I was planning to draw her a map, but she was so quick to get going, I forgot. But she has Waze, so what could go wrong? She just has to go east, north, then east.

Well, I just looked at Life 360, and saw she was to the west of OUR house. What? So I looked at the Life 360 history, and she drove off west and up the coast, then up and over and then got on the right freeway but too far north--she got on that freeway after the point that she should have gotten onto another freeway...basically my kid is driving all over Los Angeles and I mapped it out and if she doesn't make a wrong turn, she will get there an hour late and have 61 miles under her belt!

I'm chuckling to myself (but also writing you all because of course I'm holding down being nervous!)

That's the problem with following Waze -- it takes you wildly out of your way to save 1 minute.

Well, I'm sorry I read this, because you came on here for reassurance and in your situation, I would be...

Totally calm, naturally. It's going to be fine. Your daughter can manage this. Don't look too often at your Life thingie. Don't call her if she's still on the road.

My son is 14. I'll have to deal with this eventually. Sigh.

This is way too young to be doing that kind of drive, imo.

Way too young for a trip like that and way too old for a sleepover.

Isn't it rush hour in LA now? Waze probably took her a different route to avoid traffic jams.

Where she going? Calabasas?

It’s a good learning experience.

My son got stuck on the beltway due to WAZ.

I did something very similar in a midwestern city when I was 16 - and that was the dark ages so no cell phones. I had to go to a brightly lit gas station and ask for directions. And then I called her on the pay phone so her mom wouldn’t call my mom, worrying.

She will hopefully learn something tonight ?

What a weird perspective.

Makes me nostalgic for the 1990s, when I girl could go visit her weed dealer in peace.

I would have driven her.

Is she safe???

Are you already out of school for the summer? I am in CA too and we have a few more days.

I bet pp are right that waze took her an out of the way route to avoid traffic.

Is she going to text you when she gets there.

Also I totally disagree that a 16 yr old is too old for a sleepover. WTH

Why is this too young? I drove from Howard county to the Cap Center at that age to see a Prince concert. You don’t learn to drive well unless you drive....
