| We are in a RM cluster ES right now and we just saw JW and I was shocked to see their tiny stage on the long side or a narrow cafeteria. It is one step up and is a smaller stage than our ES with less potential seating. This is a school with 1300 kids. Why do they not at least have a cafeteria that can support a lot of chairs for a concert or play. Didn't they just add an addition to the school? Does middle school not do performing arts or music. I guess where we grew up all schools had a decent theater or combo, but each level it grew much bigger for the size of the school. I was really surprised and curious what other cluster MS look like. We are new to the area from 2 years ago. |
| Actually I would have asked if any do not. We’ve been to a variety of area MS’ because of various events and they all had theaters. |
| The stage at Frost is at the end of the gym. They set up folding chairs as needed. If it's a bigger production than that, they move to Wootton next door. |
| Loiderman is getting an actual dedicated performance space but every other middle school uses the cafetorium for that. |
| My DC who is at JW said when they have plays and such that require a larger space, they do it in the new gym. |
Nice! I was just about to say that all the middle schools I know have a stage in an "apr" -- shared space with cafeteria or gym. I wouldn't call any of those a "theatre." Always so hard to see anything with these configurations, but at least you can get kids on stage and people in the house. Bravo, Loiderman, though. |
| I've never seen any theater space at North Bethesda Middle School, but perhaps they have one. I know the year-end productions are at Walter Johnson high school. |
Yes, and it looks really nice! https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/facilities/construction/project/loidermanms.aspx |
They use the stage at the end of the gym for the spring musical, while choir and instrumental music concerts are at WJ. |
Can you list them? |
| JW is a dump. |
| Silver Creek is brand new and just has a stage in the cafeteria. |
JW has a much larger elevated stage at the back of the main gym. I know Redland MS has a similar situation. For a variety of reasons JW has always done any presentation on the smaller cafeteria stage or on the main floor of the gym. The recent play was very successful and next year might require the bigger stage. |
| Brooke Lee has a theater in it's dedicated drama room. A raised stage at the end of the room. The school itself is old and I think due to be replaced, but it does have a real theater. Small, but real. |
NP. SSIMS doesn't have one, not even a stage at the end of a gym or cafeteria. They sometimes use the all-purpose room stage in the adjoining elementary school for school plays, but this is a source of friction, and they seem to have given up attempting that. The only option is fitting events into the band room, or scheduling a HS auditorium. |
