| We are new to an elementary school in McLean. I gave $50 gift cards for xmas and $25 for staff appreciation. What is appropriate for end of year? $50? $100? |
$50 is good. If you feel the teacher was superb, do that $100. Many parents will do $10-$25. |
| Are those amounts applicable to a daycare provider too? |
| Depending on the county, there may be a limit to how much one family can give an individual teacher for the year. In APS it's $100. I usually give about $20 for each occasion (xmas/teacher appreciation/end of the year). I've only gotten $50 gift cards from individual students a few times--usually it's $10-25. |
| You sound very generous. Former teacher here. I never got more than a $50 gift card from an individual family. Hope that helps. |
I agree. $50 has been the top and I’m at a school with a FARMS rate of ~6%. |
| $25 has always been our max. One very outstanding teacher we did $50. |

We stopped after elementary school.
It feels like bribery after that. Very few bring in things at the MS/HS ages—except for the Huffman, Loughlin types. |
No, for daycare you give one week’s tuition. |
Lol! |
|
We don't do in middle school because I never met any of the teachers and one teacher doesn't spend most of his or her day with DC.
Nothing to do with bribery. I don't think they could put the gift card and the kid together even. |
It's the end of the year. All recommendations and grades have been given. I'm not understanding the bribery angle. |
There's always that Bitter Teachers Don't Deserve Anything As They Go Into a Paid Summer Vacation Betty who pops up when even the hint of kindness towards teachers is mentioned. I'll bet you email Chipotle every spring about that Buy 1 Get 1 Free for Teacher Appreciation Week. This is the oddest statement I've ever heard about a middle school teacher. Those of us with middle school children know how much of an impact they have on our children. I can't imagine any teacher spends a year with a student and can't put a face to the child's name. |
And if you've never met any of your children's middle school teachers, that says more about YOU as a parent than it does the teacher. I'm willing to bet those gifts I'm giving my DC's middle school teachers that many other parents have met them this year. Did you not attend Back to School Night? Take part in any PTA events? Schedule a meeting to say "Hi, I'm Larla's mom. Please let me know if you need anything?" |
| Do you do end of year SACC gifts? How much? Thank you |
