Easel

I would like to buy an easel for my daughter for christmas. Can someone recommend one? I looked at the Melissa and Doug but the reviews said the chalkboard was not great. I am looking for one with a chalkboard on one side and an area to paint on the other. Thanks.

We have the Melissa and Doug Easel, it works fine for us.

We've been very happy with the Ikea one.

Another happy melissa and doug owner here. We haven't had any problems with the chalkboard and DS uses it a lot.

i have a melissa and doug easel. i paid $60 for it. if i could do it over, i'd go ikea... or only buy the melissa & doug if it was $30.

keep in mind in most cases you have to buy the roll of paper separately for another $30.

The Ikea easel is $15, the rolls of paper are $4. It's some of the best money we've spent on our toddler. He loves it!

We have an easel that we got at an art supply store. It came with one roll of paper. We refill the roll with butcher paper--I got a HUGE roll at Sam's Club for about $20. It's lasted over a year.

We have M&D but use the Ikea rolls - they fit. The best thing about M&D in my opinion is how well it works for two kids - whether for a playdate or if you have two of your own. In my case, I put my older daughter on one side with the paint in cups in the open tray and the board set at the right height for her, and I put my younger daughter on the other side and just put paint in the cupholders and put the board on the lowest setting. I found the best price at AC Moore by using a 40% off coupon to buy it.

We have one and found that you can get good use out of it with a older child if one side is a whiteboard.

I think the complaints about the M&D chalkboard have been addressed by the company - the complaints I saw were posted a few years ago. We got one recently, and it works perfectly. The quality is really good, and it's much more attractive than the bulky, plastic easels. Good tip about the IKEA paper - wish we'd bought some while we were just there!

Anyone have good ideas about replacement paint?

12:08 here - wrt paint, we just buy the washable paint they have at AC Moore or Michael's.

I have the Ikea one (received it as a gift) and wish I had the M&D one.

If your main concern with M&D is the chalkboard, I really don't find the Ikea chalkboard to be that great either. A big pet peeve of mine with the Ikea one is there is no shelf on the chalkboard side to hold the chalks and what not. M&D seems to have better storage.

Like someone mentioned upthread, you can use Ikea paper on the M&D easel. You don't have to use the M&D paper roll. Heck, I don't even use the Ikea paper roll they way it was intended. I bought clips separately and rip off pieces of paper from the Ikea roll and clip them to the easel. Find it so much easier.

Last year, Amazon had a really good deal on the M&D easel. I think it was around $25. If you want to be patient, watch Amazon and other places to see what types of deals they have.
