How long did you keep your kid in a 5 point harness?

Anonymous
My just turned 4 year old is 39 pounds. He’s in a chicco 5 pound harness.

My niece is 4 years old, probably around 36 pounds, and in a high back with the seat belt.

I’m not asking “who is right?”, nor do I have info on the seat requirements or her car info. But I saw the photo today and was struck, because it hasn’t I fired to me at all to move my son to a seat belt.

5.5 year old still is bc she falls asleep in the car often.

I have a big (90th percentile on both height and weight) just turned 4 year old and he’s still harnessed. That said, he’s in a forward-facing only seat that converts to a belt-positioning booster. I will probably switch him to the seat belt after he turns 5.

I switched mine at 4.

My 5.5 year old is still in a 5 point harness. He’s 37 lbs, and our seat requires 40 for the seatbelt, so it’s not up for debate right now. I get it though—his friends are all in seatbelts, and he’s been asking.

6, four is way to young.

7, but my kids aren't big and they can buckle themselves into the 5 point just fine so it wasn't any sort of imposition.

My 6.5 year old is 37 lbs. Our highback booster has a 30 lb minimum, and he started in it at 5. He recently started complaining that his shoulders were being squished so we moved him to a backless booster.

6.5 full time and until 7.5 for long car trips.

My older kid switched at around 6.

Just switched my almost 5yo and I wish I'd waited a little longer. We hardly ever drive, but I am thinking about putting him back in the harness for the longer car rides we have this summer. He likes to wiggle around and I don't think he'll maintain proper positioning for a long ride.

6.5 year old who weighs 48 lbs is in one. Falls asleep in car regularly. buckles herself in.

We moved to a high back booster at 6. Used a 5 point harness until then. I know four year olds in backless boosters but they don't sit properly.

My giant 5-year-Old, 55lbs, is in one. She’s been asking to switch since her older sister did, but I don’t think we will any time soon. She has a backless booster for rare trips in our “other” car, but that’s a couple times a month, if that.

My 5.5 year old is still in one, he's 50lbs and is THIS close to his shoulders being at the top strap of his seat. I know I need to do it soon, but I like that he can buckle/unbuckle himself in, and I think he'll have a harder time with the other strap.
