PreK-4 Slots Held for Special Ed Students

Anonymous
Does anyone know whether there is a deadline by when PreK4 lottery seats reserved for Special Ed students are released (if not needed) and made available for students on the wait list? I recently spoke with our IB school where we are waitlisted, and they indicated that they were waiting for Special Ed to release one spot in the PreK-4 class if it is not needed, and then they would open the spot up to the waitlist. I wasn't sure whether there was a district-wide standard for how long they hold slots for Special Ed, or if it is specific to each school? Thanks in advance for any insights

Do you mean Early Stages? Or other types of placements.

They are supposed to be held open all year. A child with an IEP has the legs right to PK3 or PK4 seat even if they are only entering the school system late in the year. Many children are in private preschool or day care or at home before they are diagnosed and qualified for an IEP.

Wish I knew what school told you that so I could report them to DCPS and OSSE.

In the past, PK4 Early Stages seats have been released before the Oct. 5 count day. PK3 Early Stages seats are held all year and are not allowed to be released.
