How giving is the University of Vermont with aid?

DC really likes the school but we're wondering how good they are with OOS aid--financial and merit?

The NPC includes a merit estimate. OOS Cost of Attendance is 60k. A 36/1600/4.0 would generate a 20k presidential scholarship.

If your DC has good grades and scores they will probably give aid, which can be generous.

Have you done the Net Price Calculator for the school? The school's website should list the scholarships available and the merit amount.

Two years ago, DC received enough merit to bring it down to the in-state cost of W&M. He decided to go elsewhere, but finances were not the issue.

Does that mean he got more than the $20,000 Presidential Scholarship listed on the website? Because to us, a tuition of $40,000 would not be cheaper than UMD and so no real reason to pay the extra $12,000 to go to Vermont, but if there is more merit aid at play my DC might apply.

Realize that W&M is almost $10,000 more/year for VA in-state students than UMD is for MD in-state students.

W&M this past year was $39k+all in for in-state. Vermont after the scholarship was within 10% of that.

Unlike many schools, they are clear about the OOS merit aid possibilities on their website. Our kid was offered the presidential scholarship ($20K/year). Combined with DC TAG, UVM was among the most affordable options.

Ahh, thanks to both PP's for the information.

Pretty lousy in our experience. DS was offered no merit aid (and we're not eligible for FA) from there, and $15k/yr from Michigan State, which is actually higher ranked--especially in his field of study. Had the impression that they're a bit more self-impressed than necessary, both from the lack of merit aid and also from dealings with the administration.

Once you choose an out of state school, the price generally rises $20K. If you are trying to achieve more than $20K in merit, it's going to be difficult.
