DC United U13 program cancelled

I heard that DC United has decided not to have a U13 (2007) program next year, in addition to the previously announced/US Soccer inspired closing of the U12 (2008) program next season.

Has anyone else heard this? The U13 program was previously listed on the tryout page but is now no longer there.

This this is true. It was posted last week in the list of club implosions, etc thread.

Will be interesting to see how this affects rosters at other clubs, many of which have already conducted tryouts and presumably offers/acceptances.

Will be interesting to see how this affects rosters at other clubs, many of which have already conducted tryouts and presumably offers/acceptances.

At least at the older ages, DA clubs don't send out offers or announce rosters until the summer. There will be plenty of room on other local rosters for the displaced DC United kids. It really is a shame though. It's a pity DC United doesn't have wealthier owners who are more committed to the DA.

At least at the older ages, DA clubs don't send out offers or announce rosters until the summer. There will be plenty of room on other local rosters for the displaced DC United kids. It really is a shame though. It's a pity DC United doesn't have wealthier owners who are more committed to the DA.

I know that Arlington DA started giving offers before DCU announced it wasn't having a U13 team next year. Why did they do that? It would have been much easier for some of the best kids to just shift to Arlington DA if they wanted. Now it's a mess.

US Soccer eliminated the age groups, this isn’t a DCU thing.

US Soccer eliminated the age groups, this isn’t a DCU thing.

They eliminated U12 not U13.

My sense is that the DCU players knew about this or at least suspected it because I saw some at tryouts last week. Or they were covering their bases, but seems like most tried out for other teams. Rosters are sufficiently big at 11v11 that I would not be surprised if clubs have room, either because they left a couple of spots open.

What will be interesting is the impact this will have on game day rosters and playing time for clubs' current players, who won't be in a position until next fall to see if their playing time will be cut due to displaced DCU players.

FWIW at the Arlington DA tryout there was a slew of DCU DA players as they had already gotten wind of the changes. A bunch of Loudon players as well. Several DCU DA 2007 boys moved to Achilles over the Christmas break too, probably also getting wind of impending changes.

18 is a bit heavy. Ideally 15-17 depending on talent available.

Depends on the league. EDP allows 22 on the team roster, with 18 able to dress for the game.

Depends on the league. EDP allows 22 on the team roster, with 18 able to dress for the game.

wouldn't go over 18 unless High School age group.

Not everyone got advance notice. I know one or two families that were surprised and "stuck".
