CCL v. EDP for U12

Anonymous
DS's coach has told us he'd like to move him up to his club's EDP team from his current CCL team. (He coaches both.) Can someone give us a sense of how these two leagues compare in terms of driving time to games and level of competition? Are EDP teams that much more competitive? How many divisions are there in each age group and how does the lowest EDP division compare to the top CCL one? No goals to play in college but looking for a fun level of competition.

I'm confused. What club has their A team in EDP and B team in CCL? I didn't think CCL allowed that.

EDP has multiple tiered divisions, and you didn't say whether you are currently in CCL or CCL2, but if the coach is moving your player up to a higher team, then it's safe to assume the level of competition would be higher.

As far as any difference in driving distances, it depends on where you are. If you're coming from FC Frederick or Ellicott City, EDP's going to be a lot better. If you are from Fredericksburg or Culpeper, not so much.

Main issue I think you should consider is just whether the move up is right for your son. What will it mean in terms of his role on the team, playing time, and so forth.

Top CCL teams do not compare to top EDP teams. CCL needs to retire.

You can get a sense of travel by looking at the Spring schedules Find the current team and see where they played.

EDP has tiered divisions, which range from ok to some of the best teams in the area. There is relegation between the Fall and Spring seasons, which helps to create more balanced divisions.

As the PP said, the travel distances will depend where you live.

I don't know about the level of play at all age groups, but the fact that some former CCL teams are putting their top teams in EDP is curious, if not telling. The original CCL model did not allow for relegation or alternative placement, so a weak club was forced to put its top team in CCL, which lead to many blowouts. That's seemed to have changed, but I don't know the current rules for placing teams.

Keep in mind that VA has HS soccer in the spring and MD is in the fall. If you are a MD team it is difficult to get matches in the spring with the VA team and 90% of the CCL teams are in VA. Lots of CCL teams also play in EDP because of this...yes top team plays in both leagues.

Certainly telling, but not curious.
There simply aren't enough good teams in CCL to make it worth while for the best teams.
Let's face it, there are about two or three clubs in CCL that are significant better than the others. Since they don't have any kind of pro/rel, you either have your team play up an age, or try to find better competition elsewhere, which is why the big clubs are starting to put their top teams in EDP and their second teams in CCL.

Doesn't CCL have more Virginia teams and EDP more Maryland teams? Info is kind of dated and possibly wrong but that's my impression

Don’t some clubs have top teams in CCL and lower teams in (lower level) EDP?

What clubs are you thinking about? I assume Arlington and Loudoun. Bethesda is not in CCL, what other large clubs are dominant in CCL ?

In the younger age groups, Bethesda has teams in CCL Next Gen VA and MD.

No

Some have their top teams in EDP

My U14 and U11 are both in EDP. They were formerly in CCL and NCSL.

EDP has by far much tougher/better competition. Most teams have been from Maryland, many Baltimore teams.
