Mia a real name or nickname?

I really like Mia but dh wants to go with Miriam. Let's say our daughter prefers the nickname Mia. Is Mia a professional name or a nickname?

OP here. That's funny. I read on another forum Mia is short for Marie in Scandinavian countries.

It was the 7th most popular name in the us last year so I’m pretty sure most people consider it a full name.

It’s a full name but I love the idea of using it as a nickname for Miriam or Marie.

Miriam is a super ugly name. Just name the kid Mia.

It's a full time but I've also seen people using it as a nickname for Amelia or Emilia.

"Mia" is a common term for bulimia ("Ana" is anorexia).

There are a lot of "pro-ana" and "pro-mia" sites. It's a "thing." I wouldn't name my child this.

Mia Farrow’s real name is Maria. As a nickname or a full name, it’s pretty.

+1. Why would you saddle a little girl with a weird, old-lady name like Miriam?
